Spring has sprung and it is time to purge all that has accumulated over the winter months. The Certified Fabulous team knows the importance of spring cleaning your home, but let us not forget to cleanup cosmetic products as well. We all have a basket of skin, body and hair care products in our bathrooms, or a makeup bag full of cosmetics. Unopened, well-formulated products can remain stable for a couple of years, if stored at room temperature. However, heat and humidity promote the growth of mold and bacteria, and since most of us store our cosmetics in the most convenient place in the house, the bathroom, even unopened products can be at risk for contamination. Once a product has been open and exposed to the air, the clock starts ticking.

Cosmetic products DO go bad. At best, they stop performing the way they used to, could evaporate, or the feel of the product may change. Do you know when to purge your makeup and skincare products?? The Cert FAB team is here to help. We will explain the when and why you should toss your cosmetic products.

Most cosmetic products will have either a PAO symbol or an expiration date denoted somewhere on the packaging. "PAO" stands for "period after opening" and is symbolized like this: PAO

The PAO symbol will also have a number followed by an "M" (M for month). The number indicates the number of months the product is guaranteed to be stable, after the product is open. For example, if you see a PAO symbol with 12M stamped on it, the company is telling you the product is good to use for 12 months after opening. This number is determined by testing performed on the preservatives used in the formula which keep the product from growing mold and bacteria.

The expiration date is simply a date printed somewhere on the cosmetic's packaging (usually on the bottom) which indicates when the product is due to expire. In some instances, a product may have a problem well before its PAO or expiration date. Cosmetic packaging that is warped, expanded or shows signs of deterioration is a definite sign that something is wrong with the formula and should be tossed. If it smells funny, or the texture of the formula has changed significantly, definitely toss it out as well.

Protect your skin this winter with these tips from Dr. Michael Shapiro!

1. How to Sneak Sunscreen into your Winter Routine?

It is best to do something every day, as then you are less likely to forget. Many people think that sunscreen should only be applied when it is sunny. In the winter, on sunny days it is still important to apply sunscreen. The cold temperature does not change the harmful nature of the sun’s rays. On cloudy winter days, however, sunscreen application is also very important. Clouds block visible light, but not ultraviolet light, and thus you can get a tan and even a burn if you are out for an extended period of time on a cloudy day. Daily application of the sunscreen is therefore definitely the best way to go.

2. The Minimum SPF Readers Should be Wearing (No Matter Their Age or Skin Color!)?

The minimum SPF is 15, but an SPF of 30 is better. The common mistake people make is to apply a higher SPF and expect it to work all day long. SPF 15 or 30 sunscreen is great, as long as you reapply. When you are sweating, or if you go in and out of water, you should be reapplying every 2 hours. For non-beach days on the street, one morning application of SPF 15 sunscreen is adequate if you are not out all day long.

3. Where (and how much to apply) for winter sun safety?

A thin coat is adequate, but it needs to cover all sun exposed parts of the body.

4. How to avoid deadly skin cancers?

With today's busy life, women are finding it more challenging to find ways to look fabulous. We see the tabloids, and what they are doing to celebrities! Sadly, we are doing the same things to ourselves. Making women feel self conscious! Here are a few tips to help you "get your life" while looking fabulous!

1) Moisturize: It is hard to put moisturizer on your face after makeup, but you can grab a small "purse sized" can of "spritzer" or a water mist. (Evian, Shiseido) Spray directly on the face to make you feel fresh and moisturized.

2) Foundation: Using a powder foundation compact is a great way to refresh your makeup! Use it as a touch-up after lunch, or when getting ready for cocktails after work! You can use them over any foundation product you are currently using. I like the "Skin Illuminating Foundation" from Bobbi Brown!

3) Concealer: This is the item that can make you look awake in an instant! Bobbi Brown has an AMAZING "corrector/concealer" method that is "the secret of the Universe". If you don't want to do that, an item that I JUST CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT is YSL's, "Touche Eclat"! This phenomenal product is like a "magic wand" that you can use alone or over concealer!

4) Eyes: Using "Long-Wear" products on the eyes helps you to look fabulous, without having to fuss! Whether it is in a stick or in a pot, these products help you to focus elsewhere, while people are amazed at how you can pull it all together, and still get so much done. My suggestions are waterproof mascara, long wear stick shadows, and long wear eyeliner. Using an "oil-based" remover helps you take it all off easily and smoothly! Remember to apply, hold (for 10 seconds), and then swipe for easy removal!

Hi Everyone and welcome to 2013... Can you believe it!  So I guess the Mayans were wrong and we still have a few years left here on Earth huh?  Well what's a beauty rock star to do?  Hit the spa of course!  This week we've all been talking about salon treatments.. what works and what doesn't work.  Is it worth the money to go or can I just do the same at home.  For many things, yes you can, but sometimes someone else rubbing your tired, overworked puppies is well worth it!  In my years I have been lucky enough to experience the good, the bad and the down right nasty of spa life.  So I thought I would share a couple pointers I've learned.

1)  What experience are you looking to have at the spa?  Are you looking for just a quick waxing or are you looking for a relaxing, aromatherapy experience?  Set your expectations before you walk in the door.  Even if you're just going in for a quick wax, but still want a relaxing day, choose accordingly.

2)  Do your research on the spa.  Many people take the time to write up reviews on their experience on the spa and sometimes if you're lucky they'll write about the therapist they used.  It's amazing what you can find out about places with a little google search.

3) When choosing a treatment, do your research before your appointment. Each spa perform treatments differently.  I would recommend calling ahead and asking, what products they use, how they use them, are there any side effects you should be concerned about?  Once you're there and in the chair, feel free to ask questions to the therapist about the procedure.  This is your body remember!!  They are there for your enjoyment, not the other way around.  If something doesn't feel right or hurts, let them know.

4) Most spas will give you a walk through for first timers and show you around and introduce you to the facility.  If they don't, ask for one.  Remember you're a paying customer and if you don't feel comfortable or it's dirty, you can always walk out.  Follow your gut instinct and don't feel guilty.
