Sweet summertime is finally here and like most people, the Certified Fabulous team is ready to get outside and enjoy the every bit of the beautiful weather that we can. Protecting your skin from the sun is very important as it may prevent dark spots, premature aging, and more importantly skin cancer. Because of this, we have been very busy putting many SPF products to the test to find out which ones meet all of our standards and would make a great go-to option for our readers. After much research, testing, and a lot of sunbathing, we have narrowed it down to a few different products that we all agree are our favorites.

  • Olay Total Effects Feather Weight Moisturizer $17.99

& Olay Regenerist Luminous Brightening & Protecting Lotion with SPF 15 $25.99

    olayspfboth
Olay Total Effects entire line is wonderful, but the Feather Weight Moisturizer SPF 15 is an essential for everyday skin care. This moisturizer makes a great lightweight primer for your face and can be applied alone or worn under makeup. It applies smoothly and feels hydrating immediately but also absorbs quickly leaving your skin moisturized and healthy without leaving a greasy residue. The Feather Weight Moisturizer provides seven benefits to your face, including plumping wrinkles and fine lines, brightening as well as evening skin tone, diminishing the appearance of pores, lightening dark spots, enhancing skins elasticity, and restoring moisture. If used as part of your daily routine, not only are you protecting your skin from aging and further sun damage, you are also helping to heal prior damage that may have already happened. If you already have some dark spots the Olay Regenerist Luminous brightening & protecting lotion with sunscreen is a wonderful moisturizer to use with the added protection of SPF 15 which provides UVA and UVB protection to help prevent early aging. This moisturizer is designed to visibly fade the look of dark spots for a more even skin tone.
  • Bioelements Sun Diffusing Protector SPF 15 $41.00

    & Bioelements SPF 50 FaceScreen $53.50

bioelementsspfimageAnother product that stood out to many of us is the Bioelements Sun Diffusing Protector and FaceScreen SPF 50. These sunscreens are both designed to protect from both UVA and UVB rays to give skin full protection from harmful rays. With the higher SPF in the FaceScreen, it is an ideal option if you are spending time outside and want to keep your face protected and healthy. "After applying this moisturizer and then sitting in the sun all day, my skin was left looking glowing and tanned, without any redness or tenderness" – Certified Fabulous Team member Heather. Keep in mind that it is always good to reapply SPF throughout the day.
  • HydroPeptide Solar Defense SPF 30 $44.00

    spfhydropeptideimage
HydroPeptide Solar Defense SPF 30 is a skin tone adjusting, moisturizing, facial sunscreen. Made with Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide, HydroPeptide is a physical barrier sunscreen, meaning that the formula actually creates a physical barrier between sun rays and your skin to protect from burning as well as keeping the heat out of the skin. This is another great option if you have any sort of skin sensitivity or inflammation. Ingredients such as acai, green tea, and aloe make-up this nutrient rich sun block helping to seal moisture into your face leaving a matte finish without any oily residue. The combination of ingredients give the lotion a nice scent and doesn't smell like the typical chemical filled sunblock, it is actually pleasant smelling. One of our favorite benefits of the HydroPeptide is that when applied to your face, it "self-adjusts" to the color of your skin tone. This Solor Defense will also reduce the look of blotchy redness and can take the place of wearing a foundation. The blend of ingredients helps to fight off acne and minimize the premature signs of aging all while protecting your skin from the harmful sun rays.

Since it is National Skin Cancer Awareness month we wanted to share with you all some ways to help protect your skin! We have included 5 of the biggest mistakes people make with SPF's from Dr. Rachel Nazarian from Schweiger Dermatology Group.

Mistake #1: SPF still works if you use a little

In order to get the highest protection that your sunscreen advertises, and achieve that SPF number on the label, you need to apply a nice thick layer. Most people apply too little sunscreen, leaving skin unprotected, and achieving a sun-protection-factor far below the number written on the bottle. SPF should be applied at approximately 2 milligrams of lotion per square centimeter of skin, or about one ounce for your entire body. That's roughly the amount in a shot glass. Be generous with your sunscreen and slather it on, otherwise you've got nothing but false sense of security.

Mistake #2: Sunscreens are all the same

Sunscreen is divided into two broad categories: Physical and chemical. Physical sunscreens are thought to be superior by some dermatologists in a few ways. Unlike chemical sunscreens, which absorb the sun's rays and can create free radicals, physical sunscreen protects skin by deflecting the radiation. Classic physical blocker sunscreens include ingredients such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide and are a better choice for people with sensitive skin, as they tend to be less irritating than their chemical sunscreen counterparts.

Mistake #3: SPF lasts, so I can throw it on and go

This is a very common misunderstanding--and a dangerous one! The correct way to approach sunscreen is to: Apply early, re-apply appropriately and replace often. Many sunscreens require 15 minutes, some even 30 minutes, before they are fully absorbed into the skin. Keep the application of sunscreen early in your daily regimen so by the time you're heading out, your sun protection is already at work! You have to REAPPLY sunscreen often to keep the benefits going. At most, sunscreen remains effective for two hours, but if you're sweating, swimming, or rubbing, you'll need to reapply even sooner. And finally, remember the shelf-life. Using expired sunscreen is a common reason for sunburn. Most sunscreens have a shelf-life between two and three years, however due to its unstable nature, bottles open for longer than one year should be thrown out. Additionally, if the expiration date has been reached, or if the sunscreen was left outside room temperature, it's less likely to adequately protect you.

Mistake #4: I can mix SPF with anything

Sunscreen is super sensitive, delicate, and unstable. Mixing your sunscreen with lotions, creams, or other skincare products can dilute the active ingredients and reduce the SPF below what the labeling reflects. To wear sunscreen along with other topical makeup, rub sunscreen into the skin until it's fully absorbed, and then apply makeup or lotions after. And remember, that makeup and lotion with SPF 15 doesn't cut it! You need a minimum SPF 30 applied in a nice solid layer. Makeup can be applied afterwards.

It is officially time to break out the sunscreen! FINALLY! It seems like I have been waiting forever for some sun and warmth...but then again when you live in Maine we really do wait forever for these 3 glorious summer months.

Now that I'm older (slightly) and wiser (on good days) I know how crucial sunscreen is on a daily basis. Long gone are the days where I naively went tanning just to fit into society and match my looks to magazine fashion models. I look up to actresses that have embraced their "paleness" with pride, like Nicole Kidman and Anne Hathaway. I hope the "tan is cool" phase goes out of style because if you have a skin tone like me, or a Franco American heritage, you know that tanning is impossible to do naturally and we would consider burns an improvement to our "whiteness".

Lupita Nyong'o gave an inspirational speech on black beauty at the Essence Magazine Black Women In Hollywood event that resonated with me in a way I could similarly could relate to. Looking at magazines at what we think is beautiful and then comparing yourself to that is something that has always happened and something that needs to stop. Learning to find beauty in your flaws and embracing them if something that comes with age, but it still doesn't make it easy to see images of what we are made to believe is beautiful. Especially now with all of the photoshop "scandals" becoming headline news, I can only hope that one day we can put regulations on photo retouching, or at least reject ones that are clearly overdone, much like they have in EnglandLOCCITANE Jenipapo SPF body lotion

With that being said, I rely heavily on sunscreen and making sure I follow the rule of applying before I go in the sun and then reapplying as needed. I'm not a totally angel, I admit I use blockers with only 15 or 20 in them, but something is still better than nothing! I also stay pretty committed to a particular brand once I find ones I love and when it comes to luxury ANYTHING I always turn to L'OCCITANE!

L'OCCITANE: Jenipapo Body Jelly Milk SPF 20 is a light jelly cream texture with SPF 20, this protective body milk enriched with vegetal ingredients helps prevent sunburns while moisturizing the skin with a non-greasy protective film. Containing a jenipapo extract from the Cerrado region of Brazil, this body jelly milk leaves skin delicately fragranced with a green, fruity floral scent.

Hot Tips for Summer Skin Care

Warm breezes, sunny walks in the park, shorts and sandals...all conjure up the images of finally escaping from this last ridiculously frigid winter. Just ahead are lazy, hazy, hot summer days, and while that puts most of us in the mood for some outdoor fun and lighter clothing, it also means we are about to force our skin into a completely new environment.

Most of us have had our skin wrapped up against the elements and kept in dry heated air for the past 6 months. We have slathered and creamed our skin with oils and lotions to preserve it (Think about those mummies you see in the museum.) Now it's time to take those wrappings off and let our skin breathe a little!

However, before you jump into showing off that thawed out skin of yours, there are some things you will want to do get it out of hibernation and looking its glowing best.

elena-lipson-simple-ways-to-refresh-your-beauty-routine-artFirst, you will want to put a good exfoliation regimen into place. This can be done by purchasing a sponge made for this purpose like a BUFPUF
sponge. Loofah, and light fine textured sponges are best for all over body use. You can use scrubs but they tend to be harder to apply everywhere and get the even complexion you are looking for. Many of us are also tempted to overdo it and that can cause irritation and even some skin damage. If you have a favorite scrub that works well for you then employ that on an every other day basis.

Exfoliation is the number one thing that will reveal newer and brightened skin preparing it for a good cleanser and moisturizer so that they work better. It is also time to switch to a lighter cleanser that is naturally based. Glycerin. Olive oil, and gel type bars are great for cleansing without stripping skin of its natural oils. Almond oil and oatmeal are also excellent choices. Using products that contain alcohol and sulfides can over dry skin and actually make it more blemish prone.

Select moisturizers carefully and make sure they are petroleum free. Choose products that use natural oils like palm. Olive, and even cocoa butter are very good at holding moisture balance and will not clog pores or cause breakouts. In the event you do run into a blemish or two this summer, simply applying a dab of pure tea tree oil will speed the healing process and get your skin looking clearer fast.

Whether it's the beach or your own backyard you have a whole new set of rules for caring for an protecting your skin. Be sure to remember your sunscreen. I recommend you use lotions and natural oil based products for these too. There have been problems with the flammable aspects of the aerosol spray variety so if you use aerosol beware of any nearby fires or sparking devices as the product will be flammable until it is completely dry.

f6e685f52cd848e289d98b069a249e13As for how high the protection needs to be SPF 30 is plenty of protection as long as you apply it regularly and follow the directions. Anything higher can be irritating to skin and greasy. Higher SPF concentrated products tend to give people a false sense of protection even though they need to be reapplied as often as the lower concentrations.

While we are on the topic of sunscreen, now is a great time to check yourself for any unusual changes and mores or new or unusual things on your skin.

While skin cancers can show up anytime, I call this skin cancer season because now is a great time to be aware of your skin and any changes that have occurred while we were covered up in the cooler months.

Did you know that the American Dermatological Society has a great way to do this called the ABC's for the signs of skin cancer? This is for any changes that occur in your skin or moles that you already have or show up. To learn the signs of skin cancer follow the A, B, C, D rule:

A. Asymmetry
B. Border irregularity
C. Color change, dark, or multicolor
D. Diameter greater than 5-6 mm’s

Any unusual dry or red flaky patches that show up and don't go away should also be checked out. No one knows your skin better than you do, so be sure to respect any changes that occur. Better safe than sorry. Keeping all these tips in mind as you enjoy your summer will mean that your skin will get to enjoy it too while still looking its best.

Coola SPF 30 Sunscreen 3.11.14COOLA Classic SPF 30 Cucumber Moisturizer for Face

I was at a ZZ Top concert this weekend in Tampa, Florida and it was really hot… both the concert and the temperature. The concert was awesome…I was so glad I had applied my Coola SPF 3o before and during this concert. The moisturizing cucumber is my new favorite SPF.

I love Coola products; living part of the year in the south I am exposed to the sun a lot, living, working and playing. The sun is wonderful lots of vitamin D… but can also be your worst enemy.

Hello and Welcome to another Friday!

I'm so excited to be talking about sunscreen.  You know what that means?  Summer's coming!!! Hot 04122013 Coola Sport Spray Sunscreen certified fabulousdays, sundresses, cold drinks on the deck, who's with me?  right?  Well we all know that with being in the sun and for some fair skin maidens just being outside, sunscreen should be worn.  But when you walk down the aisle of your favorite drug store, there are SO many choices.  Which one do you choose?

recently I tried an aerosol sunscreen, Coola's SPF35 Pina Colada.  It offers broad spectrum protection and is water resistant up to 40 minutes.  What I really like about it is, rather than being an alcohol base that dries quickly on your skin , it's more of an dry oil base that helps moisterize your skin.  This isn't just your regular sunscreen, it actually has anti oxidants in it and is rich in Omega 3 and 6.  oh and i should mention the smell...oh so yummy! www.coolasuncare.com

well friends, ever wonder how an aerosol product is filled?  Well check this out...
