Sweet summertime is finally here and like most people, the Certified Fabulous team is ready to get outside and enjoy the every bit of the beautiful weather that we can. Protecting your skin from the sun is very important as it may prevent dark spots, premature aging, and more importantly skin cancer. Because of this, we have been very busy putting many SPF products to the test to find out which ones meet all of our standards and would make a great go-to option for our readers. After much research, testing, and a lot of sunbathing, we have narrowed it down to a few different products that we all agree are our favorites.

  • Olay Total Effects Feather Weight Moisturizer $17.99

& Olay Regenerist Luminous Brightening & Protecting Lotion with SPF 15 $25.99

    olayspfboth
Olay Total Effects entire line is wonderful, but the Feather Weight Moisturizer SPF 15 is an essential for everyday skin care. This moisturizer makes a great lightweight primer for your face and can be applied alone or worn under makeup. It applies smoothly and feels hydrating immediately but also absorbs quickly leaving your skin moisturized and healthy without leaving a greasy residue. The Feather Weight Moisturizer provides seven benefits to your face, including plumping wrinkles and fine lines, brightening as well as evening skin tone, diminishing the appearance of pores, lightening dark spots, enhancing skins elasticity, and restoring moisture. If used as part of your daily routine, not only are you protecting your skin from aging and further sun damage, you are also helping to heal prior damage that may have already happened. If you already have some dark spots the Olay Regenerist Luminous brightening & protecting lotion with sunscreen is a wonderful moisturizer to use with the added protection of SPF 15 which provides UVA and UVB protection to help prevent early aging. This moisturizer is designed to visibly fade the look of dark spots for a more even skin tone.
  • Bioelements Sun Diffusing Protector SPF 15 $41.00

    & Bioelements SPF 50 FaceScreen $53.50

bioelementsspfimageAnother product that stood out to many of us is the Bioelements Sun Diffusing Protector and FaceScreen SPF 50. These sunscreens are both designed to protect from both UVA and UVB rays to give skin full protection from harmful rays. With the higher SPF in the FaceScreen, it is an ideal option if you are spending time outside and want to keep your face protected and healthy. "After applying this moisturizer and then sitting in the sun all day, my skin was left looking glowing and tanned, without any redness or tenderness" – Certified Fabulous Team member Heather. Keep in mind that it is always good to reapply SPF throughout the day.
  • HydroPeptide Solar Defense SPF 30 $44.00

    spfhydropeptideimage
HydroPeptide Solar Defense SPF 30 is a skin tone adjusting, moisturizing, facial sunscreen. Made with Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide, HydroPeptide is a physical barrier sunscreen, meaning that the formula actually creates a physical barrier between sun rays and your skin to protect from burning as well as keeping the heat out of the skin. This is another great option if you have any sort of skin sensitivity or inflammation. Ingredients such as acai, green tea, and aloe make-up this nutrient rich sun block helping to seal moisture into your face leaving a matte finish without any oily residue. The combination of ingredients give the lotion a nice scent and doesn't smell like the typical chemical filled sunblock, it is actually pleasant smelling. One of our favorite benefits of the HydroPeptide is that when applied to your face, it "self-adjusts" to the color of your skin tone. This Solor Defense will also reduce the look of blotchy redness and can take the place of wearing a foundation. The blend of ingredients helps to fight off acne and minimize the premature signs of aging all while protecting your skin from the harmful sun rays.

No-Ad Skin Care Prevent and Brighten Anti-aging Body Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 15

This SPF 15 body moisturizer comes in a tall spray can and has a lock top, just turn it and spray it where you want it. It is Broad Spectrum and has UVA/UBV protection. This body moisturizer is so easy to use and is a non-greasy, fast absorbing formula.

My skin is usually very dry. I first applied just a spritz to my legs, then rubbed it in and it seemed well calibrated and gave me just the right amount of moisture. No-Ad recommends holding the can 4 inches from your skin and spraying in a continuous motion. Do not spray directly on your face, but you can spray it on your hands and then apply to your face. I then continued to apply it on my legs and other body parts; it absorbed nicely without any greasy residue.

The Anti-aging Body Moisturizer has a plethora of anti-oxidant ingredients; Vitamin B3 which brightens and boosts hydration. Vitamin C which fights free radicals. Vitamin E eases dryness, bolsters skin's UV defense. Argan Oil helps diminish appearance of age spots and Sunflower Oil is a source of Vitamin E. This sunscreen is recommended for daily use by the Skin Cancer Foundation.

Active Ingredients: Avobenzone 1.2% Sunscreen, Homosalate 7.5% Sunscreen, Octisalate 5% Sunscreen

I have been using it daily as my everyday body moisturizer. My skin has felt great well hydrated, soft and smooth.

Summer is here again and that can only mean one thing, Sunscreen! With the days getting longer and the sun getting brighter we tend to spend a lot more time outside in the sun, and you don't want to forget to protect your skin. The best way to protect yourself from strong UV rays is by applying sunscreen to any exposed areas and be sure to repeat. There are two different kinds of sun screens that are hitting the headlines with much debate: Chemical and Physical. The Certified FABULOUS team has made it our mission to test many different brands out there and we wanted to give you some nice examples of physical sunscreens and chemical sunscreens. Here is what our team has found:physicalspf

Physical sunscreens work by deflecting the UV rays off of the skin by using all natural ingredients such as Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide. Typically, physical sunscreens are not absorbed through the skin, do not irritate the skin, and do not cause allergies.

I would be willing to bet that sunblock is one of the most neglected steps in everyone’s daily skin care routine. Now I don’t have any statistics on it, but from my own experience, I can tell you it is absolutely neglected. I never feel prettier than when I have a nice glowing tan, but I have to constantly remind myself that I will not be feeling so pretty when I am covered in wrinkles and sun spots. This summer I am going to commit to wearing sunblock on my face. I'm going to load my face up with antioxidants, moisture, and healing benefits that so many sunscreens are made with. We at Certified FABULOUS have reviewed some great sunscreens made specifically for the delicate facial skin. All of these are wonderful for minimizing the looks of fine lines, preventing further skin damage, and keep our faces from aging before our time. All of the products listed protect your skin from both UVA and UVB rays. Protect by Honor MD, Sun Visor by Goldfaden MD, Bioelements FaceScreen, and HydroPeptide Solar Defense are four great products that will help you keep your skin safe and well cared for during any of your summer adventures.

  • honormdspf
Protect by Honor MD is a SPF 20 moisturizer that would be great for everyday use. This feels more like a moisturizer than a sunblock. Protect has a nice light smell that leaves only a faint and refreshing scent behind. It absorbs into your skin quickly and doesn't leave behind a greasy residue at all. Protect is made as an anti-aging product and reduces the formation of wrinkles on your skin and face.
  • SPF-Face3
Sun Visor made by Goldfaden MD Skincare is an oil and fragrance free sunscreen. Sun Visor is a wonderful sunblock to use daily on your face because it is said to prevent sun damage that leads to fine lines as well as dark spots, and is made with organic red tea which is full of antioxidants that your skin needs. Sun Visor is made oil-free and blends into your skin nicely and leaves your face feeling ultra-moisturized with only a light coverage. Another great feature about Sun Visor is that its main ingredients are titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, which means that it the sunblock creates an actual physical barrier between the UVA/UVB rays, and your skin. This is perfect for anyone trying to steer clear of certain chemicals or are looking for this type of protection.
  • hydropsolardefense
HydroPeptide Solar Defense is another physical barrier sunblock. Made with Green Tea, Acai, Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide, Solar Defense smells great and is also loaded with great antioxidants for your skin. HydroPeptide Solar Defense offers long lasting hydration and protection for your skin to keep your skin from aging prematurely, without making your face look or feel oily. HydroPeptide Solar Defense is SPF 30 and is also gluten-free, paraben-free, phthalate and sulfate-free.
  • bioelementsspfboth
If you are looking for a face sunscreen with a higher SPF, Bioelements SPF 50 FaceScreen would be a perfect moisturizer to try. This sunscreen is much thicker, like a night cream, and provides a bit heavier coverage on your face. When applied, it rubs in smoothly, and leaves with you a hydrated, dewy look. Bioelements FaceScreen is made to be non-irritating, non-allergenic and non-sensitizing, which makes it the perfect option for anyone with skin sensitivities or sensitive skin conditions. Bioelements FaceScreen helps to prevent fine lines and wrinkles from forming due to over exposure to the sun, and helps to decrease the risk of skin cancer and early aging.

Since it is National Skin Cancer Awareness month we wanted to share with you all some ways to help protect your skin! We have included 5 of the biggest mistakes people make with SPF's from Dr. Rachel Nazarian from Schweiger Dermatology Group.

Mistake #1: SPF still works if you use a little

In order to get the highest protection that your sunscreen advertises, and achieve that SPF number on the label, you need to apply a nice thick layer. Most people apply too little sunscreen, leaving skin unprotected, and achieving a sun-protection-factor far below the number written on the bottle. SPF should be applied at approximately 2 milligrams of lotion per square centimeter of skin, or about one ounce for your entire body. That's roughly the amount in a shot glass. Be generous with your sunscreen and slather it on, otherwise you've got nothing but false sense of security.

Mistake #2: Sunscreens are all the same

Sunscreen is divided into two broad categories: Physical and chemical. Physical sunscreens are thought to be superior by some dermatologists in a few ways. Unlike chemical sunscreens, which absorb the sun's rays and can create free radicals, physical sunscreen protects skin by deflecting the radiation. Classic physical blocker sunscreens include ingredients such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide and are a better choice for people with sensitive skin, as they tend to be less irritating than their chemical sunscreen counterparts.

Mistake #3: SPF lasts, so I can throw it on and go

This is a very common misunderstanding--and a dangerous one! The correct way to approach sunscreen is to: Apply early, re-apply appropriately and replace often. Many sunscreens require 15 minutes, some even 30 minutes, before they are fully absorbed into the skin. Keep the application of sunscreen early in your daily regimen so by the time you're heading out, your sun protection is already at work! You have to REAPPLY sunscreen often to keep the benefits going. At most, sunscreen remains effective for two hours, but if you're sweating, swimming, or rubbing, you'll need to reapply even sooner. And finally, remember the shelf-life. Using expired sunscreen is a common reason for sunburn. Most sunscreens have a shelf-life between two and three years, however due to its unstable nature, bottles open for longer than one year should be thrown out. Additionally, if the expiration date has been reached, or if the sunscreen was left outside room temperature, it's less likely to adequately protect you.

Mistake #4: I can mix SPF with anything

Sunscreen is super sensitive, delicate, and unstable. Mixing your sunscreen with lotions, creams, or other skincare products can dilute the active ingredients and reduce the SPF below what the labeling reflects. To wear sunscreen along with other topical makeup, rub sunscreen into the skin until it's fully absorbed, and then apply makeup or lotions after. And remember, that makeup and lotion with SPF 15 doesn't cut it! You need a minimum SPF 30 applied in a nice solid layer. Makeup can be applied afterwards.

I love Burt’s Bees their products are 100% natural and feel great.

Burts bees honey and shea sugar scrubThis fabulous sugar scrub is a wonderful blend of oil, honey and sugar. I applied a small amount of scrub into my palms and gently rubbed it to the rough areas on my skin. Taking special attention to my heels and feet, which seem to get very dry.

It is officially time to break out the sunscreen! FINALLY! It seems like I have been waiting forever for some sun and warmth...but then again when you live in Maine we really do wait forever for these 3 glorious summer months.

Now that I'm older (slightly) and wiser (on good days) I know how crucial sunscreen is on a daily basis. Long gone are the days where I naively went tanning just to fit into society and match my looks to magazine fashion models. I look up to actresses that have embraced their "paleness" with pride, like Nicole Kidman and Anne Hathaway. I hope the "tan is cool" phase goes out of style because if you have a skin tone like me, or a Franco American heritage, you know that tanning is impossible to do naturally and we would consider burns an improvement to our "whiteness".

Lupita Nyong'o gave an inspirational speech on black beauty at the Essence Magazine Black Women In Hollywood event that resonated with me in a way I could similarly could relate to. Looking at magazines at what we think is beautiful and then comparing yourself to that is something that has always happened and something that needs to stop. Learning to find beauty in your flaws and embracing them if something that comes with age, but it still doesn't make it easy to see images of what we are made to believe is beautiful. Especially now with all of the photoshop "scandals" becoming headline news, I can only hope that one day we can put regulations on photo retouching, or at least reject ones that are clearly overdone, much like they have in EnglandLOCCITANE Jenipapo SPF body lotion

With that being said, I rely heavily on sunscreen and making sure I follow the rule of applying before I go in the sun and then reapplying as needed. I'm not a totally angel, I admit I use blockers with only 15 or 20 in them, but something is still better than nothing! I also stay pretty committed to a particular brand once I find ones I love and when it comes to luxury ANYTHING I always turn to L'OCCITANE!

L'OCCITANE: Jenipapo Body Jelly Milk SPF 20 is a light jelly cream texture with SPF 20, this protective body milk enriched with vegetal ingredients helps prevent sunburns while moisturizing the skin with a non-greasy protective film. Containing a jenipapo extract from the Cerrado region of Brazil, this body jelly milk leaves skin delicately fragranced with a green, fruity floral scent.

Hot Tips for Summer Skin Care

Warm breezes, sunny walks in the park, shorts and sandals...all conjure up the images of finally escaping from this last ridiculously frigid winter. Just ahead are lazy, hazy, hot summer days, and while that puts most of us in the mood for some outdoor fun and lighter clothing, it also means we are about to force our skin into a completely new environment.

Most of us have had our skin wrapped up against the elements and kept in dry heated air for the past 6 months. We have slathered and creamed our skin with oils and lotions to preserve it (Think about those mummies you see in the museum.) Now it's time to take those wrappings off and let our skin breathe a little!

However, before you jump into showing off that thawed out skin of yours, there are some things you will want to do get it out of hibernation and looking its glowing best.

elena-lipson-simple-ways-to-refresh-your-beauty-routine-artFirst, you will want to put a good exfoliation regimen into place. This can be done by purchasing a sponge made for this purpose like a BUFPUF
sponge. Loofah, and light fine textured sponges are best for all over body use. You can use scrubs but they tend to be harder to apply everywhere and get the even complexion you are looking for. Many of us are also tempted to overdo it and that can cause irritation and even some skin damage. If you have a favorite scrub that works well for you then employ that on an every other day basis.

Exfoliation is the number one thing that will reveal newer and brightened skin preparing it for a good cleanser and moisturizer so that they work better. It is also time to switch to a lighter cleanser that is naturally based. Glycerin. Olive oil, and gel type bars are great for cleansing without stripping skin of its natural oils. Almond oil and oatmeal are also excellent choices. Using products that contain alcohol and sulfides can over dry skin and actually make it more blemish prone.

Select moisturizers carefully and make sure they are petroleum free. Choose products that use natural oils like palm. Olive, and even cocoa butter are very good at holding moisture balance and will not clog pores or cause breakouts. In the event you do run into a blemish or two this summer, simply applying a dab of pure tea tree oil will speed the healing process and get your skin looking clearer fast.

Whether it's the beach or your own backyard you have a whole new set of rules for caring for an protecting your skin. Be sure to remember your sunscreen. I recommend you use lotions and natural oil based products for these too. There have been problems with the flammable aspects of the aerosol spray variety so if you use aerosol beware of any nearby fires or sparking devices as the product will be flammable until it is completely dry.

f6e685f52cd848e289d98b069a249e13As for how high the protection needs to be SPF 30 is plenty of protection as long as you apply it regularly and follow the directions. Anything higher can be irritating to skin and greasy. Higher SPF concentrated products tend to give people a false sense of protection even though they need to be reapplied as often as the lower concentrations.

While we are on the topic of sunscreen, now is a great time to check yourself for any unusual changes and mores or new or unusual things on your skin.

While skin cancers can show up anytime, I call this skin cancer season because now is a great time to be aware of your skin and any changes that have occurred while we were covered up in the cooler months.

Did you know that the American Dermatological Society has a great way to do this called the ABC's for the signs of skin cancer? This is for any changes that occur in your skin or moles that you already have or show up. To learn the signs of skin cancer follow the A, B, C, D rule:

A. Asymmetry
B. Border irregularity
C. Color change, dark, or multicolor
D. Diameter greater than 5-6 mm’s

Any unusual dry or red flaky patches that show up and don't go away should also be checked out. No one knows your skin better than you do, so be sure to respect any changes that occur. Better safe than sorry. Keeping all these tips in mind as you enjoy your summer will mean that your skin will get to enjoy it too while still looking its best.

Kiss My Face! Hailing out of New York comes a product that is gluten-free, vegan friendly, and has absolutely NO PARABENS, phthalates, or artificial fragrances! Kiss My Face has been around for over 30 years and proud to produce eco-friendly products for all of us green-goers (and non-green goers).  This has honestly been one of the first lines of products with an ingredients list that, I can A. pronounce, and B. really get behind.

I started off with the Peace Soaps line, an all-natural castile soap. First ingredient, aqua, second ingredient, coconut oil, and third ingredient, awesome! Actually, its olive oil, but still awesome. It comes in a 17-ounce bottle with a hand pump. So where did I put it to good use? In the bathroom! I loved it, guests loved it, and even my husband loved it. I got to try the pomegranate acai Peace Soap.

My first thought was how incredible it smelled, it reminded me of a bag of Skittles… and I love Skittles. What I really enjoyed is that my hands actually felt softer and moisturized, which isn’t always the result of soap. I liked how the scent stayed with me but not at all overpowering, and my hands felt cleaner than if I had used an antibacterial soap. The Peace Soap can be used for hand, bath, and body. One soap for all, however I already had a shower gel claimed for my second review. That being said, Kiss My Face has more than just soap for you.

Kiss My Face Group Peace Soap 4.18.14 Certified Fabulous

KMF shower gel, Valentine Edition-Early to Rise in Wild Mint & Citrus. Two of my favorite things just made a baby! Decent lather, energizing smell, non-drying, who comes up with this stuff? And here are some of my favorite ingredients: olive oil, aloe, vitamin E, peppermint, spearmint, lemongrass, and grapefruit extracts. I’m pretty sure I’m in love with this shower gel and it comes in all sorts of other scents. This too has multiple uses…it makes bubble bath!

Protect your skin this winter with these tips from Dr. Michael Shapiro!

1. How to Sneak Sunscreen into your Winter Routine?

It is best to do something every day, as then you are less likely to forget. Many people think that sunscreen should only be applied when it is sunny. In the winter, on sunny days it is still important to apply sunscreen. The cold temperature does not change the harmful nature of the sun’s rays. On cloudy winter days, however, sunscreen application is also very important. Clouds block visible light, but not ultraviolet light, and thus you can get a tan and even a burn if you are out for an extended period of time on a cloudy day. Daily application of the sunscreen is therefore definitely the best way to go.

2. The Minimum SPF Readers Should be Wearing (No Matter Their Age or Skin Color!)?

The minimum SPF is 15, but an SPF of 30 is better. The common mistake people make is to apply a higher SPF and expect it to work all day long. SPF 15 or 30 sunscreen is great, as long as you reapply. When you are sweating, or if you go in and out of water, you should be reapplying every 2 hours. For non-beach days on the street, one morning application of SPF 15 sunscreen is adequate if you are not out all day long.

3. Where (and how much to apply) for winter sun safety?

A thin coat is adequate, but it needs to cover all sun exposed parts of the body.

4. How to avoid deadly skin cancers?

As temperatures rise and the days grow longer, your chances of getting too much sun exposure increase as well. You know better than to go outside without applying SPF to your skin but what about your hair? Touchback Plus is a system of dual UVA/UVB-protective shampoos and conditioners that help maintain hair’s optimum color intensity and prevent fading. Each dose provides superior sunscreen protection and hydration for your hair and keeps your salon color looking as fresh as it did when you stepped out of your colorist’s chair.  Go ahead and soak up the sun this season without subjecting your hair to harmful UV rays or stripping it of its vivid color and shine.

In addition to providing sunscreen protection, TouchBack Plus goes one step further to actually improve the condition and health of your hair by delivering smoothing and reparative benefits to dry, damaged strands. Now you can enjoy your fun-in-the-sun with no regrets! TouchBack Plus revitalizes hair adding manageability, shine and a healthy dose of color to both natural and color-treated hair with nourishing formulas that include sunflower, chamomile flower, green tea leaf, rose hips and lemon peel extracts. No ammonia, peroxide or sulfates added!

I tested the line out and found that my color became richer and more vibrant with each use. I would not recommend using the colored system every day since the color pigments can build overtime and become too intense. You can use the colored system three times a week with your other favorite shampoos and conditioners. Or if you want the daily dose of SPF protection without the color deposit, TouchBack Plus also comes in clear! The products are available in eight shades– Rich Black, Dark Brown, Medium Brown, Light Brown, Ash Blonde, Golden Blonde, Light Auburn, Dark Auburn and CLEAR. Pick them up at your local Ulta store, Ulta.com or TouchBackPlus.com.

Simple, the “Sensitive Skin Experts” have come out with three new great products that I cannot live without; Oil Balancing Cleansing Wipes , Eye Make-up Remover Pads and Protecting Light Moisturizer with SPF 15.

Simple Sensitive Skin Experts Oil Balancing Cleansing Wipes certified fabulousI sometimes go out for a quick run at work and the Oil Balancing Cleansing Wipes are an absolute must have for my face when I get back to my office. These generously sized wipes contain skin loving ingredients like zinc PCA and glycerin. Zinc PCA reduces the amount of sebum that the skin produces and refreshes the skin and helps to control shine. Glycerin helps hydrate and moisturize leaving the skin soft. Plus, after a run, the cool wipes feel great and immediately clear my skin of dirt. 25 wipes, about $6.

Simple Sensitive Skin Experts Protecting Light Moisturizer certified fabulousOf course before I go for that run or before I start my day for that matter, I always moisturize with a sunscreen. Protecting Light Moisturizer with SPF 15 is perfect for my sensitive skin. Its oil-free, non greasy with no perfume or dyes. It feels velvety smooth and blends perfectly while protecting from UVA and UVB rays. $12

At the end of the day, it’s time to take it all off right? The Eye Make-up Remover Pads are awesome, the best I’ve used. They remove it all, including waterproof mascara! They don’t sting or irritate the eyes at all and as a pad of course, you can take them anywhere. 30 pads, also around $6.Simple Sensitive Skin Experts Eye Make-Up Remover Pads certified fabulous

Simple skincare products are dermatologist tested, non-comedogenic, and hypoallergenic and contain no animal derived ingredients. Now that’s pretty simple.

As a BB cream it accomplishes multiple things, “moisturizes, provides sun protection, covers imperfections and at the same time acts as a nude, natural make up.” I found that the BB Cream goes on smoothly, blends in well with my skin, and is quite moisturizing even on it’s own. However if you feel that your skin needs more hydration, you can use it in combination with your everyday moisturizer. The Lumene BB cream provides more coverage than I was expecting, but hydrates while allowing for a lighter color and weight than a traditional foundation. Also, the Lumene BB Cream has Vitamin C and arctic cloudberry to brighten the skin, and antioxidants protect the skin. With this you can get your skincare and makeup in one step, which is great for those of us who are always running late! The less I have to do in the morning the better!

So with Lumene Illuminating Anti-Age BB Cream SPF 20 at $34.99 on Amazon, high-low options include:

Omorovicza Complexion Perfector BB SPF 20 at $135.00

Garnier Skin Renew Miracle Skin Perfector B.B. Cream at $12.99
