Not too many people know this about me, but I used to be a farmer. The hard-core, fifth generation farmers whom I worked for would consider me more of a “hobby” farmer because the novelty of it wore off after a few years, but they would never deny my dedication to the hard work I put into helping them manage their large organic/biodynamic dairy farm. Biodynamic farming is a fascinating way to farm, and is based upon many interesting principles including the fermentation of the natural fertilizers and the use of natural ingredients such as milk and honey for pest control.

This month I received Weleda’s Sea Buckthorn Replenishing Body Lotion for review. Upon doing my initial research into Weleda’s company and the ingredients they use, I was surprised to discover that this company uses over 300 biodynamic ingredients in their skincare line. The Body Lotion I tested not only includes biodynamic ingredients, but also contains Sea Buckthorn Oil, which is also amazing.

A little background on Biodynamics and the wonderful company known as Weleda. It all goes back to 1921 and something called anthroposophy. This movement, stemming from the teachings of philosopher Dr. Rudolf Steiner, encourages the individual to see his or her body, mind and spirit as intrinsically linked to our world; all part of one holistic system. Steiner, along with Dr. Ita Wegman, formed a team of scientists and doctors to figure out just how they might use this philosophy to take care of their patients’ needs. It was understood that the human body has a remarkable ability to heal itself, but sometimes it needs a little help. So a personal approach was developed using natural ingredients that can holistically work with and support the body’s healing tendencies. They started by creating one of the world’s first Biodynamic® gardens to grow what they needed.  Patients were healed, wellness and balance were restored to them, and never once was a synthetic chemical or lab-made preservative used in the process. These amazing scientists were the founders of the company known as Weleda. The name Weleda was chosen after the the Celtic goddess of wisdom and healing, which couldn’t be more appropriate.

Weleda Replenishing Sea Buckthorn Body Lotion 8.5.13

These Biodynamic principles go into the farming techniques of many of the ingredients used in Weleda’s product lines. Weleda also uses many wonderful natural ingredients in their formulations. Seabuckthorn is the active in their replenishing Body Lotion, and its story is also an amazing one. The berries of Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae Rhamnoides) are so rich in vitamins and nutrients that it has been speculated that the plant must have been cultivated by some ancient plant-breeder. Legend tells how the ancient Greeks used Sea Buckthorn leaf in a diet for race horses, hence it's botanical name "Hippophae" - shiny horse. According to another legend, Sea Buckthorn leaves were the preferable food of flying horse - Pegasus and allegedly was helpful to get Pagasus airborn.

05152013 Seabuck Wonders Bottle Box Serum v2 Certified Fabulous

I didn't start researching this amazing ingredient until I was given the Sea Buckthorn Deep Hydrating Serum from Seabuck Wonders. Before I review products I like to do some research on them and the ingredients in them so I can know exactly what I am trying and how it is suppose to work for me. It was amazing to read so much positive and beneficial things about this "holy fruit". I was SO excited to try the serum on my face to repair my skin and improve my skin tone, plus surging it with all of the amazing omegas abd vitamins it contains!

Sea Buckthorn Deep Hydrating Serum nourishes and supports cell regeneration to minimize fine lines and help maintain a youthful, healthy glow. The packaging is great because with an airless bottle it will dispenses a perfect amount of the serum and it only takes one hand to pump, no try to shake or squeeze product out! The scent was an amazing orange oil that smelled like I just peeled an orange :) The serum was a great consistency and was easy to smooth over my face. It does foam up a bit, but as you keep rubbing it into your skin it will absorb in clear.

SEABUCK WONDERS- Pure Himalayan Sea Buckthorn Oil Blend Omega 7 Complete

I am a health nut.  I live off of protein, fruits and vegetables.  I gave up grain and dairy.  I work out at least 4 times a week (Crossfit) and run 3-4 days a week.  The only area I’m lacking is my use of vitamins and supplements.  So when I was given SeaBuck Wonders Sea Buckthorn Oil Blend Omega-7 Complete supplements I was excited to try.  Despite its name, sea buckthorn has nothing to do with the ocean. Instead it’s a nutrient-packed shrub that grows throughout the world. Sea buckthorn offers a unique mixture of active compounds, including a variety of carotenoids (such as lycopene and zeaxanthin); tocopherols; sterols; vitamins C, B1, B2, B5, B6, and folate; and flavonoids (such as quercetin and kaempferol). It’s also one of the very few botanicals that provides a wealth of essential fatty acids, including omega-3s, -6s, -7s, and -9s.  I was anxious to see if I would experience any difference in my overall health.

Legend has it that in ancient Greece, when sick horses were let loose to roam and die naturally, the Grecians were surprised to find the horses were stronger and more energetic. This was traced to a plant the horses were grazing on called Hippophae Rhamnoides L, meaning trees that make horse shine. In ancient times, when battle-worn horses were released where sea buckthorn grew, the horses would emerge with shiny coats after feeding on the berries. This plant or shrub is now simply referred to as Sea Buckthorn. Sea Buckthorn has a rich history of use in treating numerous medical conditions. It has been called a wonder plant in many Asian countries, including China, India, and Pakistan. The berries have been used for more than 1,000 years in Tibetan and Indian systems of medicine.  The oil from these sour orange berries has been used in Russia to treat radiation burns, sunburn, and eczema. In China and India the oil has been used traditionally to relieve coughs and help digestion.

After taking two of these vegetarian soft gels daily (the recommended dose) for one month, I see a noticeable difference in my hair. It's no wonder considering the incredibly high amounts of Omega fatty acids (3, 6, 7, and 9) in these berries. Not only is this beneficial for your hair, but it's equally effective in making your skin and nails healthy and strong. I also noticed less stomach trouble while taking these supplements, which was wonderful.
