Come summer time, I tend to do less with my hair. It gets rather frizzy, and if it's humid, my styled hair will turn back to it's frizzy state in no time. So I tend to braid it, pull it back, or put it in a bun. If you want to avoid the heat from styling, there are TONS of braid options that will suit a variety of styles: casual, elegant, free-spirited, etc. So if you're interested in trying a new braid style, but not sure where to begin or even what style to choose, I have a great book to guide you!

Braiding HandbookThe New Braiding Handbook: 60 Modern Twists on the Classic Hairstyle by Abby Smith. If I'm not sure what to do with my hair for a day/or evening out, and I don't want to heat style it, this book is great to have around. It provides easy-to-create styles with step by step photos and instructions and there are so many styles to choose from, I have no problem finding one to suit my outfit. And you don't have to be great at braiding in order to follow it! I can do a basic braid, but more than that and my braid looks pretty messy, but these photos and instructions guide you through every step! There are definitely easier to create styles in this book, and a few more that will take a bit more time to perfect. I suggest starting with a look that is simple and work your way up from there. Even the simple braids create great looks - the completed style often looks more complicated than it actually is! For me, braids are a great way to add interest to my hair style, and keep my hair off my neck during those warmer days. Keep this book around and you won't run out of hair styles for this summer!

PHILIP B. Thermal Protection SprayIf you still want the full blow out hair style for times this summer, I also have just the right tools you need!

The first part of styling your hair with heat tools, is to always use some type of heat protection product. I like to use Philip B Oud Royal Thermal Protection Spray. This weightless spray detangles your hair, while shielding it from the damaging effects of blow dryers and heat irons. You are left with bouncy, soft and smooth hair. Use before styling to increase shine and prevent hair breakage. You can also take this spray to the beach/outdoor activities - mist for a weightless/invisible shield against the sun, chlorine and water. Hair won't get dry and brittle and the spray protects your hair color from fading! This multi-tasking protection hair spay has one more trick up it's sleeve - hair perfume! When you spray this product in your hair, the scent gradually releases over time for a lingering, seductive scent. You can now add a great scent to your hair without worrying about damaging it. I use this spray every time after I wash my hair, and even if I don't style it, my hair is always soft and shiny.

Philip B round hair brushThe next tool to use for a smooth blow out style is a good hairbrush. Another one from Philip B is the Round Hairbrush. This brush uses gentle boar bristles that won't snag or tangle your hair. The dense bristles pick up each strand easily and polish the strands for a frizz free finish. The brush is also made from sustainable mahogany. It feels most definitely like a luxury brush that will help create a smooth, bouncy blowout.

When searching for a quick change to your look doing a hair color change is always a great way to go. Recently I tried the UMBERTO Beverly Hills U Color Italian Demi Color Kit in Mahogany. My hair naturally is a lighter brown color with a slight hint of red and blonde highlights. I wanted to go darker but still have the hint of red. I absolutely love this Mahogany color from U Color!!! I don’t think I have ever received so many compliments on my hair color after dying it since I tried this color. They have 12 different choices of colors from blondes to blacks, to reds, browns and colors in between you are sure to find the color you are looking for.

UMBERTO Beveryly Hills Demi Color KitAnyone who has dyed their hair themselves knows this can be a difficult process especially if you have extra long, thick hair like mine. Always to be on the safe side I have to get two boxes of dye to saturate my hair so I was really surprised that it only took one box of the U color to saturate my hair.

The U Color kit includes

  • 2 Sachet packets, each with Color, Developer and Equalizer
  • Latex gloves,
  • Mini detail brush
  • Illustrated instructions
  • 1 sachet packet of U shampoo, U conditioner and U Renew Masque

You may have noticed there isn't any mention of a bottle. That’s right there is no mixing involved here! You just fold the packet so that the color is sandwiched between the developer and equalizer and cut along the dotted line then squeeze the product directly onto hair and then smoosh as if you where shampooing. Of course make sure you distribute the product evenly through the hair. If you prefer you can also use a bowl or bottle with this product and use the mini detail brush to apply.  I tried both just to see how it worked and they are both pretty easy ways to apply.  This needs to sit for 25 minutes then rinse, shampoo and condition as usual.

It has been raining for 4 days. Like seriously raining to the point where my car hydroplaned yesterday on my way to the gym.  All of the beautiful peonies are ruined, and I know the weeds in the garden are going to absolutely take over once the sun finally shines again. This weather turns me into a grouch, and worst of all is what it does to my naturally curly hair. I become a frizz ball, an afro does NOT look good on this girl.  The powers that be in the Certified Fabulous office obviously took notice and passed along to me John Freida Frizz Ease Products to help my pain.

Regardless of what product you choose, when you have the propensity for frizzy hair (all of us curly wavy haired girls), there are a few helpful tips that I must share. The best advice I ever received is to air-dry hair, or use a plug-in household fan. If you use a fan, keep face about 6 inches away from the fan, and brush with a paddle brush. Fans create less frizz than blow driers, because they make somewhat of an "air-dome" around your head, and dry it all at once, whereas blow driers put a high amount of concentrated heat onto the hair, which causes frizz. Heat, although makes the drying process faster, causes frizz ladies.  The best bet is to air dry, although I find that I lose volume at my roots going this route.  If you must blow-dry, use a diffuser, the lowest heat setting and a lower blow setting.  The extra 2 minutes this takes will be worth it, I promise.

John Frieda Frizz Ease Hair Serum 7.1I am so loving John Freida’s Frizz Ease Products.  All curly haired girls should try at least one of the extensive lines of frizz calming products.  I was given the Hair Serum and the Shine Glossing Mist, and I loved both so much that I purchased the Humidity Control Hairspray, which I will also review.  First in this trio is the Serum.  This product should be applied directly out of the shower, before towel drying your hair.  I put a quarter size amount in the palm of my hand (I have longish hair, use less for shorter hair), rub my hands together, and apply from the bottom up.  I flip my head over, and make sure to do my ends first ( a little tip given by Naz Kupelian) working my way up to the roots.  I give my curls a good scrunch then loosely wrap the towel around.  Take this time. Ladies, to choose your outfit of the day, apply your moisturizers, get dressed, feed the dog, whatever. The point is to let your curls air dry a little before moving to the next step.

John Frieda Frizz Ease 100 Shine Glossing Mist 7.1.13 Certified FabulousStep 2 is to decide on your drying process.  If air-drying works for you, depending on the level of hold you desire, you might want to use a curling crème (we all know I love Miss Jessie’s Pillow Soft Curls). I like to use a fan too dry, as suggested above, or if I’m in a hurry my diffuser and blow-dryer.  Once hair is moderately dry, the 100% Shine Glossing Mist is perfect for taming those last bits of frizz. I keep the small spray bottle in my purse as it works wonderfully throughout the day for touchups.  Neither of these products has ever left me greasy, and always leaves me with a really nice shine. On days when I add a little definition with the curling iron, I always finish my style with the Frizz Ease Humidity Spray.  This hairspray has a really nice hold, without leaving my curls crunchy feeling.  It is so apparent that the people at John Freida really know how to eliminate frizz, and their new line of frizz controlling product get a BIG thumbs up from me.  I really love how these products are available at most stores, at a really decent price. I urge all of you girls who battle frizz to give these products a try, and let me know your results.  I know you won’t be disappointed!
