There is no denying that the fishtail braid had a great run; from the side to messy to in the ponytail, but Mario Russo, owner and lead stylist of Salon Mario Russo in Boston, believes it’s time for a new tail to have their chance in the spotlight. Cue the Lobster Tail. This messy and textured twist is easy to create and doesn’t even requiring braiding skills…just twisting! Depending on the occasion, the Lobster Tail can be as deconstructed or as neat as you like.

The Lobster Tail

 1. Start with day-old hair to achieve the messy and textured look of this braid. Use a texturizing spray like Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray on the roots to eliminate any natural oils that can flatten hair.Step one lobster tail

2. Gather hair to one side, while leaving a few front pieces of hair out on the opposite. Curl these pieces with a 1-inch barrel to add more shape around the face.

Kim Kardashian is known for her signature look of voluminous long hair. However, with her upcoming nuptials to Kanye West, I expect to see something more simple and refined. At her last wedding in 2011, Kim wore her hair pulled straight back in a high twisted up-do. She accentuated this look with a diamond drop headpiece by Lorraine Schwartz. This time however, I think we're going to see something a bit more natural. A sophisticated side part style with a low bun in the back would look beautiful on her. As would a 30s inspired finger wave smoothed over one side and cascading down the other. No matter what style she wears, the world (and many brides to be) will be watching.

I expect to see Mila Kunis walk down the aisle with her usual mix of high fashion and easy going style. Having half of her hair pulled back and allowing beachy loose waves (achieved with 3 different sized barreled irons) to cascade down her shoulders and back would suit her wonderfully. I don't expect to see anything too severe or polished. A sexy, romantic look is the star's signature.

Mary Kate Olsen is always a wild card. I would suspect that she will go one of two ways. She'll either pull her hair back into Parisian chignon and allow the focus to go towards her (sure to be) one of a kind dress. Or you will get a classic bohemian look (like she wore most recently at The Met Gala) complete with long loose curls and braids of all sizes.

Whether you’re considering a new cut, color or style, Mario Russo, owner and lead stylist of Salon Mario Russo in Boston, has the 411 on what’s hot this spring. Having worked in the hair industry for over three decades, Mario knows how to spot a trend, so he’s compiled his picks for what to expect this season. Hint: Pass the scissors

Hello, Bob!
The bob is continuing to take the hair world by storm…and it is back with a vengeance! Both ends of the hair spectrum are going for the stylized bob. Those with pixie cuts are growing them out for a chin length bob, while those with long hair are chopping off inches for the long-bob. If your hair is curly or wavy, don’t let that deter you from this look; volume and texture get along great!

Tip: If you’re a little hesitant about taking the bob plunge, Mario suggests asking your stylist to create a faux-bob at the length you are considering. This will give you a better idea of what it will look like and help you make a choice with no regrets. Plus, a faux bob is a fun style to rock for your next special occasion!

Sleek & Sophisticated
For a while, hair straighteners were just the opposite of sleek & sophisticated --- instead they were being used for curls and waves, but this spring think sexy and straight. The beach waves have had a great run and textured blowouts are surely not out for good, but as indicated from the Spring 2014 runway shows, a shiny and polished ‘do, whether it’s down or in a pony, is spring’s “it” style. The sleek and straight look can always be worn numerous ways; with a side part or a center part, swept to the side, tucked behind the ears or slicked back.

Tip: A boar bristle paddle brush will help you master the shiny and sleek look and a heat protectant spray like Oribe Royal Blowout Heat Styling Spray is a very important step when creating this look, since you will be blow-drying and then straightening. Lots of protection is needed for lots of heat application!

Mono-what?
For color, expect to see just one this season says Mario; no, this doesn’t mean everyone is going blonde for the spring, it means hair color will be monochromatic. Instead of two tones like the popular ombre, hair color will be very rich in one, single color without any highlights. The blondes will be getting blonder to the point of platinum, the brunettes will go with a rich, deep espresso hue and red heads will lean towards an auburn shade. Don’t let this color trend bore you, this type of hue produces shiny hair that looks healthy and natural!

Tip: A gloss is the best way to go if you are unsure about committing to one color, because it is not permanent and it is less harmful on your hair. It also adds lots of beautiful shine!

This year when you prepare for prom night, don’t overdo it. A lot of the trends you will see this year err toward the sleek, simple and sophisticated. But while you are at it, there’s some important prom hair rules to keep in mind:

1. Take pictures early! You’ll look your most poised at the beginning of the night, before you’ve danced out your hair and sweated off your makeup!

2. “Prom dresses are less traditional, so your hair should be the same – no need to feel obligated to the traditional up-do. Explore the possibilities by adding braids (a few or many), colors, cutting or adding extensions to your locks. Have fun, explore hair magazines and websites to create your own style,” says Latoya Stuckey of Slique Hair Studio in Harlem, New York.

3. “If you wear a dress with lots of sparkle on it, you should wear your prom hair very simple. If you wear simple promdress, then go for a more elaborate hair style, maybe adding some hair jewelry,” says celebrity hairstylist Nelson Vercher. He knows — he has worked with; Jennifer Lopez, Kelly Rowland, Olivia Palermo, Kim Kardashian, Britney Spears, and they know a lot about sparkle!

4. “Comb your curls to get a more natural wave. Stay away from curling irons. Looks wet slicked hair could be combed into any style!” says Samira Eid, stylist at Cristophe Beverly Hills salon.

An updated, loose & whimsical version of the Fresh Twist

1. Begin by spritzing day-old washed hair (yes it’s true, dirty hair styles better) with Oribe’s Dry Texturizing Spray for added texture before styling.

2. Using a fine-tooth comb, tease your hair at the crown, as well as the sides to achieve ultra-volume.
