Since Earth Day is next week (April 22nd) we dedicated this week to Natural and Organic beauty (in case you haven't noticed). From the time we started to learn more about how our actions have negative affects on our planet people have been figuring out how to less our carbon footprint (defined as "the total sets of greenhouse gas emissions caused by an organization, event, product or person).

"Natural" and "organic" are words that have been around for a long time, but caught on at first as a trendy thing and now I think it is evolving into a choice that people are making from being more informed. The use of the words, although a bit over used, basically lets us know that when we see the term "natural" it means ingredients are derived, in whole or in part, from natural sources with no synthetic compounds. "Organic" meaning ingredients are supposed to contain only plant-sourced ingredients that are cultivated without the use of synthetic chemicals, irradiation, or pesticides.

Label meanings when looking for natural or organics:

  • 100% Organic: Must contain 100 percent organically produced ingredients (excluding water and salt). This is the only label that guarantees a completely organic product. These products can carry the USDA Organic Seal.
  • Organic or Certified Organic: At least 95 percent of content is organic by weight (excluding water and salt). These products can carry the USDA Organic Seal.
  • Made with Organic Ingredients: At least 70 percent of content is organic. Front panel can say "Made with Organic" and list up to three specific ingredients. These products cannot carry the USDA Organic Seal.
  • Less Than 70% Organic: Can list only organic ingredients on ingredient panel, but not on front panel. These products cannot carry the USDA Organic Seal.

Natural / Organic Logo Meanings:

  •  NSF/ANSI 305 - the American National Standard for personal care products verifies that all materials, processes, production criteria, and conditions must be met to call a product organic.
  • Ecocert - Ingredients must be renewable and packaging must be biodegradable or recyclable. For the organic cosmetic label, a minimum of 95 percent of all plant-based ingredients (and 10 percent by weight) must be products of organic farming.

  • NPA (National Products Associaton) - A product labeled “natural” should be made up of at least 95 percent natural ingredients.
  • USDA Organic - product has been produced through approved methods that integrate cultural, biological and mechanical practices that foster cycling of resources, promote ecological balance and conserve biodiversity. Synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation and genetic engineering may not be used.

  • The Soil Association - 95 percent of a product’s ingredients must be organic. If an ingredient is available organically, it must be used. The remaining ingredients must meet strict health and environmental standards.

  • - product is made with natural and organic ingredients, using “soft” manufacturing processes and environmentally friendly practices. This means no synthetic fragrances or colors, petroleum derivatives, silicones, genetically modified ingredients, or animal testing.

Confusing I know....

My approach to all of this (until we can get a set of strict guidelines for natural and organic claims) is to just read labels. I look at it like when I look at food I buy, if I can read most or all of the ingredients then I'll buy it! That being said, I experienced two INCREDIBLE natural hair and body products I am beyond thrilled to share with you! :)

THEORIE: Grapefruit Shampoo & Conditioner - First of all, their slogan "Better Hair. Fact." Pretty much sums it all up, seriously! The packaging and label are gorgeous and if any house guest were to peek in my shower and see the products they would think I spent a fortune on it! The's completely affordable!

Cosmebio - Renowned for its powerful health benefits, anti-oxidant rich grapefruit nourishes and moisturizes hair with Vitamins C, E and B Complex. Together, these vital nutrients tame frizz and fly-a-ways, leaving hair straight, soft and smooth.

The Grapefruit shampoo is professionally formulated to provide the most advanced moisturizing hair shampoo system, this exclusive blend of grapefruit extracts, hydrolyzed wheat protein and gingko biloba extract nourishes the hair and boosts absorption. Lightweight with a delightful citrus blend of anti-oxidant infused grapefruit, this mild shampoo formula leaves hair salon smooth with natural shine.

To formulate the deep moisturizing Grapefruit Conditioner, they source natural botanical compounds; infusing grapefruit extract with a blend of hydrolyzed wheat protein and gingko biloba leaf extract. Enriched with natural Vitamin C, E and soluble fiber, the conditioner deeply hydrates hair by boosting absorption and locking in moisture. The end result is silky smooth hair with natural pH balance and shine.

I was shocked and amazed by how fabulous my hair looked after using these hair products! It exceeded my expectations and left my hair flawless with a lovely scent. It absoluetly worked to it's claims and I find it hard to rotate and use other shampoos / conditioners when given the choice, hah. I highly recommend this! They have other collections too which I would be interested to try as well...

Another brand that equally impressed me is Level Naturals "Changing the world one shower at a time"!

Oddly enough I was given the Grapefruit Bergamot Body Polish AND body butter. Not that I mind, I love grapefruit! In fact, once the products were on my body I had NO complaints at all :)

The Grapefruit Bergamot Body Polish - Natural oils are blended with raw sugars and essential oils. The way this body polish is created is my favorite because I am able to scoop it into my hand and apply it easily. It's not over oily which made my showering safer knowing I wouldn't make the floor an oil slick. The oil that is in the sugar transfered to my body, where it's meant to be! After a refreshing polish the oil remained to heal, repair and protect my "new" skin that was revealed. The scent...AWESOME! I liked this so much I ended up buying the coffee flavor and almost ate it! Who doesn't like the smell of coffee anyway? :)

The Grapefruit Bergamot Body Butter - I haven't experienced a body butter this luxurious and heavenly. The consistencey was a butter / salve mix and looked beautifully whipped. Once applied to skin it immediately melts and absorbs nicely, leaving me instantly hydrated and glowing. The obsession begins! I was so in love with this that I also bought another flavor in this...this time Forest scented, even though I live in Maine and are constantly surrounded by forest scents I guess I just can't get enough :)

I also, happily, tried the Frankincense and Myrrh Soap from their line, since they started out making soaps I thought it only fitting. I'm going to sound like a broken record, but the scent (again) was ot of this world and of course the product delievered like it said!

Level Naturals Frankincense and Myrrh Soap certified fabulous review body care skincare

From the creators/founders mouths, "The Level bar is a unique combination of pure plant oils, natural essential oils, and extracts. Our bodies are like a giant sponge, so anything that we put on it, goes into it. Before we ever poured our first batch of soap, we researched what ingredients would be the best products to put on the skin, and care for what’s underneath it. This bar of soap is the product of that research. So strip down, get wet, lather it up, scrub it on, rub it in, and enjoy frequently."

The products are not only awesome to look at but incredible to use. Certified Vegan and Cruelty Free by Peta and Leaping Bunny and always 100% Natural and Gluten free. Despite having a unique streamlined aesthetic, and being sold in high end retailers, Level Naturals is a company with edge and style. All the products on their site are extremely affordable and you will definately feel like you got more for your money with the quality!

Level Naturals is a delightful and enjoyable experience that will remain in my routine for a loooong time!
