Brush up on your knowledge of flu season. Did you know that bacteria from the flu can live on your toothbrush? If you’ve been sick recently, the germs that got you sick are still on your brush, and could re-infect you or infect others who keep their brush near yours. Here are some easy tips from dentist, Dr. Seth Keiles, founder of toothbrush subscription service GoodMouth, for keeping your mouth and your body healthy during flu season.

  • Give it a taste. If food tastes odd or your mouth feels dry, it could be a sign that you’re about to get sick. Take Vitamin C, Echinacea, or even silver to stop a full-blown cold or flu.

  • Watch your mouth. Cold sores and canker sores are often a sign of a weakened immune system. If you see sores starting to form, it could mean you are susceptible to catching a cold or the flu.
  • Cover it up. If you do get sick, don’t cover your cough with your hands—doing so will spread germs to everything you touch. Instead, cough or sneeze into the crook of your elbow.

  • Rinse it away. Gargle and rinse with a non-alcohol mouthwash. It will lower the amount of bacteria in your mouth and decrease your chances of spreading germs when you cough.

  • Toss it out. Throw away your old toothbrush every time you or someone you live with gets sick. It harbors the same germs that got you sick in the first place, and can make you or others sick.
