I have a nice full set of lips, but never really wear lipstick. I love a nice gloss, or a nice chapstick, but when it comes to my lips, I prefer more function (soothing moisturization) to color. Then I was given Smashbox’s Be legendary Lipstick in Primrose, and I am now a lipstick lover after receiving so many compliments on my pretty pout.

As modern civilizations started to make rapid advances in technology and chemistry, the first manmade lipstick appeared as a cosmetic tool for the wealthy women and men of ancient Mesopotamia, Indus Valley Region and Egypt. Egypt especially managed to advance the art of lipstick making, managing to produce bright red carmine lipstick that are made from cochineal insect pigments, which is a timeless technique that is in use even today. Those lipsticks were made from powdered and processed bodies of cochineal insects or purple extracts of seaweed, mixed with various oils and waxes. History books will forever remember various important Egyptian figures that were depicted in their hydrographic images with various cosmetic enhancements – Nefertiti’s black eyeliner or Cleopatra’s bright red lips. Thankfully today there are rules against using insect parts in our skincare and makeup. The thought of smearing bug guts on my mouth is enough to make me retch.

Be Legendary Lipstick in Primrose is the perfect daily wear lipstick. The color is neutral, butSmashbox Be Legendary Lipstick 6.17.2013 e828e34c831c5d2a282b61e5064c7f67 bright enough to be worn for day or night. Primrose can be described as a neutral dusty rose shade, with more pinks than reds or oranges. I have a more olive skin tone, so pinks work well on me. This lipstick applies smoothly, and does not feel slimy or greasy like some others. It has amazing staying power. The night I wore it out for the first time I was quite liberal with my kisses, and managed to not smear anyone’s cheek or clothing. I got plenty of compliments on the shade, which is always the best indicator for how well a color looks on ones face. I truly love this lipstick and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good neutral shade that works well with any look, day or night.

Happy Father’s Day all. The product I am reviewing this week is AMAZING!! OROGOLD 24K Men’s After Shave Balm is a luxurious product, great for gifting to your wonderful dad. It is also a wonderful gift for that special man in your life, as the fragrance is so darn sexy. The fragrance reminds me of the sexy boy at the club who no matter how sweaty you are, he smells like a big batch of sexy man. Maybe not Orogold 24K Mens Aftershave Balm Certified Fabulous 6.14.13so appropriate for one’s daddy, but definitely an amazing product for any special man in your life.

What makes this project special is OROGOLD’s use of real 24K gold in their formulations. Gold and beauty are words that work well together. Throughout history, gold has been recognized for its luxurious and beautifying properties. Historians have long maintained that Cleopatra slept in a gold mask every night to enhance her captivating beauty. In ancient Rome, gold salves were used for of a variety of skin problems. In ancient Chinese medicine, gold was the key to youth; as the queen of the Ch'ing dynasty used a gold massage roller on her face daily. For centuries, pure gold has been used by the privileged and the wealthy as the secret to more youthful, beautiful skin. OROGOLD Cosmetics has included gold in their luxurious formula and made it possible to take advantage of these ancient secrets to their fullest, without having to be an actual queen to accommodate it.

This product is an aftershave balm and moisturizer in one. This lightweight hydrating balm softens and calms the skin to leave it feeling nourished and hydrated. It is quickly absorbed, helps calm razor burn, and provides the skin with balanced moisture. For use after shaving, before bed, or a moisturizer for maximum benefits. The gold is also a great addition to moisturizers, as gold penetrates to the inner layers of the skin and increases microcirculation, assisting the flow of moisture and nutrients to the skin's surface.

I let my husband test this and his helpful response was “I like it”. So descriptive, thanks hun. I tested this product on myself and found this to be so soothing on my skin. At the risk of smelling like a sexy boy, I tested this after my shave regime and my skin felt amazing. I could feel the astringent properties as I had no razor burn after my shave. As soothing and moisturizing as this product is, hands down Iove this product for its amazing fragrance. Mmmmmm, sexy boy smell.

Have a good one!

Cleansing is my single most important beauty ritual. No matter how exhausted I am at the end of the day, I always take time to wash off my makeup, the sweat from the gym or the grunginess of the day.  I have used countless cleansers with varying results. Soap & Glory’s Soap & Clarity 3 in 1 Daily Detox Vitamin C Facial Wash is surely up there as one of my favorites. This wash is full of Vitamin C, which has been used for centuries for its many health benefits.

Soap and Glory facesoap clarity certified fabulous 6.3.13It's been centuries since British sailors discovered the key to avoiding scurvy: vitamin C. Vitamin C plays a vital role in maintaining the health of your skin. Those sailors and others who couldn't get fresh fruits and vegetables suffered bleeding under the skin, ulcers and joint weakness. That's because vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is key to the production of collagen, a protein that aids in the growth of cells and blood vessels and gives skin its firmness and strength. Vitamin C also helps create scar tissue and ligaments, and it helps your skin repair itself. Vitamin C’s skin-health benefits are largely attributed to its benefits in supporting healthy collagen. Collagen works hand-in-hand with elastin to support the skin. Basically, it supplies the framework that provides form, firmness, and strength to the skin, while elastin is what gives skin its flexibility.

Modern medicine has come to realize why these herbal remedies were so trusted by ancient civilizations. When topically applied, vitamin C provides a skin-rejuvenating effect by improving collagen synthesis in the skin that slows down with aging, as well as limiting skin damage from free radicals. I believe the Vitamin C in this product helps contribute to its effectiveness.

This face wash is described as “A high-tech, gentle non-drying foaming facial wash, formulated with complexion-friendly, easy-rinse surfactants and special SUPERFRUIT™ PLUM skin brightening complex.” I used this wash for the first time in the shower. It has a very clean and fresh fragrance. I immediately loved the little scrubby bits suspended in the light green gel like formula. I love a wash that combines exfoliate properties, scrubbing always makes my skin feel clean. It was defiantly an “easy rinse” cleanser as it washed away nicely. What stands out most with this product was how clean my face felt after cleansing, without leaving my face tight and dry. I tend to have a shiny forehead, but noticed this was remedied after using this wash. I would truly recommend this product to those who have problem skin, oily skin, or for those who wear makeup and need a really thorough cleanser.

Merle Norman Miracol Original Formula Revital Lotion Certified FabulousMaybe it’s because I live on the East Coast, maybe it’s because I was born in 1980, but I had never heard of Merle Norman before Miracol Original Formula Revitalizing Lotion landed on my desk. After testing, and LOVING this product, I knew I had to do some research.  I discovered that the Merle Norman Company has a long and rich history in the cosmetic realm.

Born in 1904 in Los Angeles California, Merle Norman had a quiet beginning.  Her rise as a cosmetic legend began in the late 1920s when Merle established a business out of her home.  As a contemporary of such cosmetic legends as Helena Rubenstein and Max Factor, Merle Norman pioneered the concept of offering free makeovers to potential customers.  She encouraged women to found their own franchise businesses where consumers were offered the benefits of trying products liberally before buying them.

In 1931, Merle Norman opened her first Studio in Santa Monica, California. Her nephew, J.B. Nethercutt, soon joined her in developing and manufacturing the products she sold. In her Studio, Merle Norman carried on her "Try Before You Buy" philosophy, creating customers by allowing those who came to her Studio to discover for themselves the unique benefits of her affordably priced products. Many quickly became "true believers."  Merle Norman’s history is on full display at its headquarters near LAX that date back to 1952. There are employees whose careers at Merle Norman span decades, an on-site dentist that provides cleanings for as little as $2, a cafeteria that charges a quarter for daily hot meals, a Twenties-era Rover stove upon which Norman concocted her earliest formulas and a museum of ancestral products that includes Norman’s original “Three Steps to Beauty” of Miracol, Cold Cream and Powder Base.

I had the pleasure of testing Merle Normans Mirocol Original Formula Revitalizing Lotion.  Let me say, first off, that this is not a moisturizer, but an oil free, rinse off, deep cleansing lotion mask.  It is indicated for all skin types.  I not only tried this mask, but had my super sensitive (skinned) friend Nikki test this product with me (and a glass of Pinot).  This mask is bright pink in color, and has a strong, pine aroma.  Upon application, there was a nice sensation; you could feel the mask working.  Its claim to remove dead surface skin cells (which dull the skin) is defiantly accurate.  Upon removal of the product, my skin looked noticeable brighter and refreshed.  My face felt tighter, my pores looked more refined.  I was surprised by how non-drying this mask was, considering how well it exfoliated and tightened my skin.  My girlfriend Nikki loved it as well, and although the color of the product is bright, and the fragrance is strong, she did not experience any irritation.  This product is also indicated as a spot treatment for acne, and it really does dry out a zit in no time flat.  Love it!!

Spring is here!  Living in Maine makes one look forward to the first 70 degree day like no other. Winters are so long and dark, by the time spring finally arrives the thought of hot sunny beach days distracts my thoughts. It is also a time to start thinking about beginning another summer hair removal routine. Let’s face it, the easiest way to manage the unwanted hair is to create a routine which involves good products to make the experience easy, and pain free. Women have been removing unwanted hair for thousands of years, for a variety of reasons.

Archaeologists believe that the earliest razors used for hair removal were made of flint. These "blades" have been discovered in many excavations of prehistoric human dwellings and may date as far back as 30,000 B.C. Metalworking advancements developed in Egypt, India and Greece in 3,000 B.C. introduced the first permanent and reusable razors. It was these metal razors and modified versions of them that would be used for centuries to come, through the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and into the Victorian era. Many of the earliest forms of hair removal were related to other body modification rituals, including piercing and body art. For many primitive tribes, hair removal could be seen as a form of tribal status and wealth. Nowadays, hair removal has become much more a part of vanity grooming, with various social stigmas being attached to different types of hair removal.

05202013 Sexy Summer Legs Certified Fabulous

It began with the May, 1915 edition of Harper’s Bazaar magazine that featured a model sporting the latest fashion. She wore a sleeveless evening gown that exposed, for the first time in fashion, her bare shoulders, and her (shaved) armpits. Shocking at first, this soon caught on. At the same time a marketing executive with the Wilkinson Sword Company, which made razor blades for men, designed a campaign to convince women that underarm hair was unfeminine. By 1917 the sales of razor blades doubled as women conformed to this feminine stereotype of shaving under their arms.

The trend has continued. The average amount of time a woman will shave in her lifetime is 7,718 times, the average amount of time per shave is 10.9 minutes.  That’s an average of 322 days per lifetime dedicated to shaving our legs and armpits. Lucky for me, I was given some amazing shaving products that will make all of this shave time much easier.

SEABUCK WONDERS- Pure Himalayan Sea Buckthorn Oil Blend Omega 7 Complete

I am a health nut.  I live off of protein, fruits and vegetables.  I gave up grain and dairy.  I work out at least 4 times a week (Crossfit) and run 3-4 days a week.  The only area I’m lacking is my use of vitamins and supplements.  So when I was given SeaBuck Wonders Sea Buckthorn Oil Blend Omega-7 Complete supplements I was excited to try.  Despite its name, sea buckthorn has nothing to do with the ocean. Instead it’s a nutrient-packed shrub that grows throughout the world. Sea buckthorn offers a unique mixture of active compounds, including a variety of carotenoids (such as lycopene and zeaxanthin); tocopherols; sterols; vitamins C, B1, B2, B5, B6, and folate; and flavonoids (such as quercetin and kaempferol). It’s also one of the very few botanicals that provides a wealth of essential fatty acids, including omega-3s, -6s, -7s, and -9s.  I was anxious to see if I would experience any difference in my overall health.

Legend has it that in ancient Greece, when sick horses were let loose to roam and die naturally, the Grecians were surprised to find the horses were stronger and more energetic. This was traced to a plant the horses were grazing on called Hippophae Rhamnoides L, meaning trees that make horse shine. In ancient times, when battle-worn horses were released where sea buckthorn grew, the horses would emerge with shiny coats after feeding on the berries. This plant or shrub is now simply referred to as Sea Buckthorn. Sea Buckthorn has a rich history of use in treating numerous medical conditions. It has been called a wonder plant in many Asian countries, including China, India, and Pakistan. The berries have been used for more than 1,000 years in Tibetan and Indian systems of medicine.  The oil from these sour orange berries has been used in Russia to treat radiation burns, sunburn, and eczema. In China and India the oil has been used traditionally to relieve coughs and help digestion.

After taking two of these vegetarian soft gels daily (the recommended dose) for one month, I see a noticeable difference in my hair. It's no wonder considering the incredibly high amounts of Omega fatty acids (3, 6, 7, and 9) in these berries. Not only is this beneficial for your hair, but it's equally effective in making your skin and nails healthy and strong. I also noticed less stomach trouble while taking these supplements, which was wonderful.

L’Occitane Jasmine & Bergamot Lotion and Shower Gel

Finding the perfectly scented shower gel/lotion duo can be challenging. Artificial fragrance doesn't agree with me most of the time, giving me a headache.  However, when a shower gel is used with corresponding lotion, the result is a long lasting fragrance.  Natural fragranced products are great, but don’t always have the staying power of their more artificial counterparts.  Then I had the pleasure of testing L’Occitane Jasmine & Bergamote Shower Gel and Body lotion.

05062013 Jasmin Bergamote Perfumed Shower Gel certified fabulousL’Occitane Jasmine & Bergamot Shower Gel is part of the Grasse Collection, named after the city of Grasse in Provence. Located near the Mediterranean, the city became known as the "perfume capital of the world," by combining the cultivation of local flora with the trade of precious Eastern ingredients. Grasse had its beginnings as flourishing leather and tanning center since the 13th century. When perfumed gloves became fashionable, the town provided them, and when the leather business faded away, the perfume became king. By the 17th century, perfumers and apothecaries began settling here, and in 1729, the perfumers published their official statutes. Grasse has had a prospering perfume industry since the end of the 18th century. Grasse is the centre of the French perfume industry and is known as the world's perfume capital.  The Jasmine in these delightful products comes from this historically significant town, where the townspeople have painstakingly cultivated herbs and flowers for their fragrant elements for centuries.

05062013 Jasmin Bergamote Perfumed body milk certified fabulous

The Shower gel has a beautiful, sweet floral fragrance.  The consistency of this product is great for a shower gel.  It is neither too thin, nor too thick.  Jasmine & Bergamot shower gel lathers up nicely, and rinses well, leaving a delicate floral scent behind.  The Body lotion has the same amazing scent, and applies nicely, absorbing perfectly.  The lotion leaves behind no residue, but is defiantly moisturizing to the skin.  What I love most about these two products is when paired together, the beautiful fragrance lasts all day.  I received many compliments about my scent when using this product, and I always recommend L’Occitane Jasmin & Bergamot Shower gel and Lotion.

If you are a mom, you know the importance of being aware of the ingredients in our children’s skin care is important.  There are many controversial claims about how the chemicals in skincare can be absorbed into the bloodstream.  Regardless of what is put out in the media, I think it is safe to say that we should be aware of the types of ingredients in our children’s skin care.

For Mother’s Day week, I was given the Noodle and Boo Essential Care Kit to try.  The timing was perfect for this small box which contains the super soft lotion, extra gentle shampoo and the soothing body washes.  My girls were just beginning 2 weeks of swim lessons (8 classes over 2 weeks).  I always have them shower after being in the pool because of the chlorine, and this little set fit perfectly into my swim bag negating the hassle of either carrying full sized products or filling travel bottles. I was thrilled.

05062013 Noodle Boo Child Care Essential Kit Certified Fabulous Mothers Day Gift

Of course I immediately looked up the ingredients before I was going to slather onto the children.  Christine Burger, founder of Noodle & Boo's mission was to create luxurious products using gentle wholesome ingredients that are optimal for sensitive skin. Noodle & Boo is committed to creating the highest quality products using the finest ingredients. Each ingredient is chosen based on proven historical data and appropriateness for a given product, not for marketing propaganda. Ingredients are derived from natural resources and are 'certified organic' when available and safe to use. Made in the USA, these products are manufactured in an FDA-approved, pharmaceutical environment to ensure product quality and integrity. Every formula is hypoallergenic and clinically-tested to minimize the risk of allergic reaction, as well as dermatologist-tested to verify optimality for skin sensitivities. Additionally, the children's products are pediatrician-tested to ensure every consideration is taken to meet the needs of their youngest customers.

Knowing this, I couldn’t wait to try.  The body wash smells amazing, like a freshly washed baby. Clean and baby powder-like.  It lathered up nicely on their washcloths, and was mild even for my youngest's skin, which tends to be quite sensitive. Next was shampoo.  Usually shampooing my girls hair is a stressful ordeal, as they fuss and whine if water, let alone product gets in their eyes.  Since we were in the pool locker room, and they were sharing a shower, I was really hoping the “tear-free” claim on this product would hold true.  The shampoo smells just as fabulous as the wash, and I didn’t hear one complaint of burning eyes, and suds were defiantly being flung around. After showering, we got to try the super soft lotion.  The lotion smelled just as great as the wash, and went on silky smooth.  I hate when lotions turn white on the skin while applying (we use the term “foamy” here at Cert Fab).  This lotion absorbed nicely without the white residue. Now my girls were washed and lotioned, smelling of fresh babies.  Testing these delightful products in the locker room made the shower portion of swim lessons enjoyable, and for that Noodle & Boo, I thank you.

Curls. Straight haired gals covet them, and go through great lengths to achieve them. We see examples throughout Hollywood of long tresses expertly crafted into long beautiful waves or bouncy full curls.  We all own a curling iron (some of us 2-3, depending on one’s need for size variation and European plug capabilities), and most of us have suffered through the sulfuric scent of a perm (well, those of us born before 1992 have suffered). I remember my first perm at 9 years old, in a salon in Sears. My eyes burned, and my head stunk for a week, but I had achieved the look of all of my favorite metal bands of the era (I still love you, Brett Michaels).

1930s hair salon curls history classic machine

Historically, Egyptian nobles, men and women, would wear wigs for ceremonial purposes. These wigs would be short and curly or long and full of curls and braids. The first “curling tongs” have been dated to this period.   The upper classes of classical Greece are known to have used used curling irons as well.  In 1866, Hiram maxim, the designer of the machine gun bearing his name, obtained the first patent for a hair-curling iron.

The first perm was performed by German hairdresser Charles L. Nessler in 1906. This costly process took twelve hours. By 1945 a breakthrough was made when French chemist Eugene Schueller of L’Oreal laboratories combined the action of thioglycolic acid with hydrogen peroxide to produce the first cold permanent waves, which were cheaper and faster than earlier processes.

My pin straight hair miraculously turned curly one day as I was in the throes of puberty (around the same time as armpit hair and breast development).  Although I enjoyed the cool factor of the perms I received in the mid-eighties (think Motley Crue and Sara Jessica Parker), the 90s gave way to sleeker, straighter styles (think Shannon Dougherty on 90210 and the Jennifer Aniston on Friends).  I usually pulled my frizzy locks into a bun or ponytail, unless I wanted to spend the hour in the morning blowdrying and straightening my hair.

I love bees. These amazing honey makers are hardworking creatures who live in cooperative communities where the Queen rules all.  Bees provide us with what is one of the most amazing natural ingredient; honey.  Honey is one of the world’s oldest moisturizers.  Cleopatra was known to bathe her skin with milk and honey. Honey has been used in holistic skin care practices for hundreds of years for the treatment of acne, eczema and psoriasis.  Honey is the key ingredient in the amazing Beelove products I have been enjoying this week.
Beeline spa collection

Honey has amazing moisturizing as well antiseptic properties, making it a really great ingredient in skin care. Honeys humectant properties help attract water to the skin, moisturizing the skins to prevent against wrinkles and dryness. The more moisture our skin holds the younger its appearance.  Honeys antiseptic properties are just as amazing. Honey contains the enzyme glucose oxidase, which, when combined with water becomes hydrogen peroxide.  These antiseptic qualities help rid the skin of bacteria, helping to create a clear complexion.

Honey is the key ingredient in Sweet Beginnings Beelove skincare products.  My 3 favorites are the Body Wash, Lotion and Sugar Scrub.  All three have very clean ingredient lists, containing not only honey, but wonderful ingredients such as avocado oil, shea butter, grape-seed oil and silk protein.  The signature beeline essential oils lend a mellow,  baby powder-like fragrance.  The shower gel looks like honey, and works into a nice lather.  I liked this body wash because my skin didn't feel dry and tight after my shower (and I like long, hot showers).  The lotion applies easily, and absorbs nicely into the skin.  My absolute favorite product however, is the Sugar Scrub.  The scrub is different from others I have used.  The sugar particles are really big, not like the usual fine texture I am used to.  This made handling the product easier in that it doesn't just melt away in a hot shower. My skin felt refreshed, exfoliated and soft after using this wonderful sugar scrub.

Beelove is also amazing because of the good karma story behind its beginning.  Founder and CEO Brenda Palms Barber saw the problems that evolve from the high unemployment rates in the city of Chicago.  She recognized the difficulties faced by those being released from prison in their desire to find employment opportunities.  Lack of education and criminal background are huge barriers faced by this milieu. Barber’s solution was to start an aviary in a small vacant urban lot in the city of Chicago.  She has been able to create full time employment through the tending of bees and the harvest of raw honey.  By teaching ex-offenders the art of beekeeping, she has provided an opportunity for these people to learn a trade, helping to decrease the likelihood repeat incarceration (the recidivism rate of these worker is a mere 4%, compared to the nation average of 65%).   Barbers vision is proving to be a success, as the company is growing, with 4 aviarys in the city of Chicago, as well as hundreds of employment opportunities for those facing employment barriers.

The story behind the Beelove products is almost as good as the quality of the products themselves.

Gotta love it!!
Stacey
