Ralph Lauren Big Pony 1 Blue 8.15.13I’m a scent person. I have scent memories, as most people do.  I’ve been attracted to members of the opposite sex based solely on their scent.  I love testing new fragrances, although not all are created equal. It was a pleasure for me to try Ralph Lauren The Big Pony 1 for Women- “Sporty” Eau de Toilette this month.  I’ve always loved Ralph Lauren’s fragrances, and this Eau de Toilette is no exception.

Ralph Lauren The Big Pony 1 for Women is described as a sporty fragrance for courageous and self-confident woman. Its composition is created of citruses and flowers and it accentuates luminous grapefruit combined with sensual floral notes of white lotus. This fragrance is light and fresh smelling.  I like a “soapy” smelling perfume because it smells clean and fresh to me. This fragrance has the fresh qualities I look for in a fragrance, but also has sweet undertones of fragrance which add a feminine component to this fragrance. Every time I wear this fragrance I get sniffs, and comments about how nice it is.

Ralph Lauren The Big Pony 1 for Women- “Sporty” Eau de Toilette was launched in 2012. This fragrance comes in a light blue bottle with a large green #1 on one side and Ralph Laurens signature polo player in yellow on the other side.  An interesting thing to note about this packaging is that it can be personalized with your name, or up to 10 characters of your choosing on the front of the bottle.  This is a really cool option when thinking about gifting this fragrance to your best friend, sister, mother, or even yourself. I just love anything personalized. So if you are looking for a new fragrance, and like a clean fresh scent, I urge you to give Ralph Lauren The Big Pony 1 for Women- “Sporty” Eau de Toilette a try!!

I am a sun worshiper. I work inside all week long, so on the weekend, if I have the chance to hit the beach and bask in the sun, I'm there.  This past weekend, however, was a bit overkill.  The sky was clear, and after an extremely fun Saturday night out, a friend and I decided to hit the beach to nap off our groggies.  From 12pm to 4pm we napped in the sun.  At 4pm we realized our error in not wearing any SPF. I am already a tanned, brown bunny, but still left the beach a boiled lobster.

Monday morning was extremely difficult. Going to work was not something I was looking forward to, in my reddened state.  Of course all of the girls in the office gasped at the sight of my swollen, red skin. I was working in Grayce’s office when I noticed JOEY New York Quick Results Bye Bye Dry Chill Mist. Chill Mist?? Sounded exactly like what I needed for my hot, red skin. I grabbed the pretty pink and white box, and couldn't wait to spray this coconut infused spray onto my ridiculous sunburn. I was extremely pleased by the result of this luxurious product.

joey new york bye bye chill spray review summer tan burn sunJoey New York is known as the innovators of world class therapeutic skin care treatments and beauty enhancements products that render instant results. They have stabilized and integrated through new technology the water from tender young green coconuts into their new fast-acting QUICK RESULTS skincare collection.  Coconuts are the fruit of the coconut palm tree, botanically known as cocos nucifera meaning “nut-bearing.” This tree is recognized as “the tree which gives all that is necessary for living” virtually because all parts of the tree has some human uses. The coconut palm tree is native to Malaysia, Polynesia, Southern Asia, South America, India, and the tropics. Coconut water is packed with potent Antioxidants and Essential Minerals. Exactly what my sun abused skin was craving.

JOEY New York Quick Results Bye Bye Dry Chill Mist promises to “deliver vitamins and minerals to the face, body and hair for hydration, soft supple skin and radiance.” Hydration is so important when dealing with sun damaged skin, and I was very happy to see for myself that this product did in fact cool off my skin, leaving it supple and hydrated. I love the continuous mist technology as my hurting skin wouldn't have been able to tolerate rubbing any sort of lotion into it.  It is suggested on the packaging to refrigerate this spray for added cooling effects, which I did. This spray immediately cooled my skin off, giving me instant relief. It is truly the ultimate refreshing and relaxing skin treatment, and although not specifically indicated to treat a sunburn, this product truly eased my misery in a big way. Thanks, thanks thanks JOEY New York Quick Results Bye Bye Dry Chill Mist!!!

Not too many people know this about me, but I used to be a farmer. The hard-core, fifth generation farmers whom I worked for would consider me more of a “hobby” farmer because the novelty of it wore off after a few years, but they would never deny my dedication to the hard work I put into helping them manage their large organic/biodynamic dairy farm. Biodynamic farming is a fascinating way to farm, and is based upon many interesting principles including the fermentation of the natural fertilizers and the use of natural ingredients such as milk and honey for pest control.

This month I received Weleda’s Sea Buckthorn Replenishing Body Lotion for review. Upon doing my initial research into Weleda’s company and the ingredients they use, I was surprised to discover that this company uses over 300 biodynamic ingredients in their skincare line. The Body Lotion I tested not only includes biodynamic ingredients, but also contains Sea Buckthorn Oil, which is also amazing.

A little background on Biodynamics and the wonderful company known as Weleda. It all goes back to 1921 and something called anthroposophy. This movement, stemming from the teachings of philosopher Dr. Rudolf Steiner, encourages the individual to see his or her body, mind and spirit as intrinsically linked to our world; all part of one holistic system. Steiner, along with Dr. Ita Wegman, formed a team of scientists and doctors to figure out just how they might use this philosophy to take care of their patients’ needs. It was understood that the human body has a remarkable ability to heal itself, but sometimes it needs a little help. So a personal approach was developed using natural ingredients that can holistically work with and support the body’s healing tendencies. They started by creating one of the world’s first Biodynamic® gardens to grow what they needed.  Patients were healed, wellness and balance were restored to them, and never once was a synthetic chemical or lab-made preservative used in the process. These amazing scientists were the founders of the company known as Weleda. The name Weleda was chosen after the the Celtic goddess of wisdom and healing, which couldn’t be more appropriate.

Weleda Replenishing Sea Buckthorn Body Lotion 8.5.13

These Biodynamic principles go into the farming techniques of many of the ingredients used in Weleda’s product lines. Weleda also uses many wonderful natural ingredients in their formulations. Seabuckthorn is the active in their replenishing Body Lotion, and its story is also an amazing one. The berries of Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae Rhamnoides) are so rich in vitamins and nutrients that it has been speculated that the plant must have been cultivated by some ancient plant-breeder. Legend tells how the ancient Greeks used Sea Buckthorn leaf in a diet for race horses, hence it's botanical name "Hippophae" - shiny horse. According to another legend, Sea Buckthorn leaves were the preferable food of flying horse - Pegasus and allegedly was helpful to get Pagasus airborn.

Summertime. Love it. Hot humid weather, skirts and sundresses, going to the beach. My favorite. Only problem, my big frizzy mop of hair.  Humidity kills me; I always have a halo of frizz. I am more than willing to try any product which promises to help me with my frizzy mess. This month’s go to frizz fighter is Not Your Mother’s Lock Luster Oil Treatment, infused with Argan and Macadamia Oil.

Lock Luster Oil treatment promises to add some life and luster back to my dry, overworked frizzy hair. I am guilty of blowdrying and flat ironing my hair more than I should. This product creates a protective layer on my hair, my hot tools lock this moisture into my hair making it shiny and soft after heat styling. I loved loved loved this product for this! I applied as indicated to my wet hair from tips to roots (sparingly on my roots) before heat styling. Then after my style is complete, I used a small amount to smooth down the final stubborn frizzies.

Not Your Mothers Lock Luster 7.29.13

What makes the Lock Luster oil treatment so great? Macadamia oil reduces wrinkles and dryness. It is a natural moisturizer and emollient (emollients attract and trap moisture from the air). Macadamia oil is light and non-greasy so it is easily absorbed into the hair shaft and skin. Another gift of macadamia nut oil is that it contains proteins, and its vitamin E contributes skin-care benefits and long shelf life. The high count of mono-unsaturated fatty acids makes the oil mimic the sebum (naturally produced oil on scalp and skin which protects it from damage).

Together, macadamia oil and argan oil replenish the hair’s natural emollients with the high content of essential fatty acids found naturally in both of these exceptional oils. The combined benefits help to nourish and protect the hair from harmful UV rays while repairing hair follicles for improved elasticity and shine. Lock Luster Oil Treatment contains both of these oils, making this product so amazing.  I urge you to try Not Your Mother’s Lock Luster Oil Treatment!!

VineVera Resveratrol Eye Collection 7.22.13 Certified FabulousDon’t you just love it when people say “wow, you look really tired,” after you had a full nights sleep and feel fine?? I've mentioned in the past my terribly dark-under eye circles (thanks for the crappy genes mom). I am always willing to try any product which is indicated for dark circles or under eye puffiness, and this month I was able to test a true winner. One of the nicest under eye creams I have ever experienced, Vine Vera’s Resveratrol Eye Collection Dark Circle Eye Cream is so luxe, I can hardly stand it.

What makes this under eye cream so amazing is that it is formulated with Resveratrol (Pitchia/Resveratrol Ferment Extract). Pichia/ResveratrolResveratrolResveratrol, found in the skins of grapes, is a phytoalexin, a defense mechanism produced by several other plants (peanut skins) to fend off attacking bacteria. It has been reported in numerous studies to be one of the most potent natural chemopreventive agents inhibiting the cellular processes associated with tumor development, including initiation, promotion, and progression. It also has significant anti-inflammatory, cancer-fighting and anti-aging properties. In cosmetics and personal care it is used as an antioxidant agent, an anti-inflammatory, skin lightening & brightening agent, and sun damage repair agent.

Ferment Extract promotes the synthesis of Type IV Collagen, and improves overall appearance of the skin. What an amazing ingredient! This amazing product is also full of Caffeine and Vitamins A (Retinyl Palmitate) and E (Tocopheryl Acetate) to reduce the immediate look of tired eyes, while hydrating the delicate eye area.

The first thing I must describe is the beautiful packaging.  This cream comes wrapped up like a beautiful gift. The heavy walled jar is a beautiful copper/burgundy color and it comes encapsulated in a beautiful heavy box like a fine gift. The cream is extremely thick, so be mindful to use sparingly. The directions suggest to gently apply cream to area under eyes and along orbital bone using the ring finger. I noticed  a decrease in under eye puffiness immediately, it was amazing. After using for 3 days, I noticed a decrease in the darkness of my under-eye circles as well.  Truly an amazing, luxurious eye cream that I would recommend to anyone!!

Here in Maine we are having a dismal summer.  It rained 21 days in the month of June, and July is looking just as grim.  I am a true sun worshipper, which is difficult when living in a state where the days are short all winter, and the weather 5 months out of the year is so cold it makes it difficult to be scantily clad, baking out in the wondrous sun. I will admit, I love time in the tanning bed, but am extremely concerned with the aging effects the sun has on my skin. I usually use an SPF 30 on my face, especially when spending time in the tanning bed. So how to achieve the “all over” sun kissed glow (the face has to match the body), the answer is bronzer.  Not all bronzers are created alike, and some are downright orange, sparkly or otherwise just messy and gross. Too Faced Bronzed and Poreless Pore Perfecting Bronzer was given to me to test during beach week, and I loved, loved LOVED it!

Marie-Antoinette-Makeup

Throughout history, tanning has gone in and out of fashion. Using poisonous whiteners to create pale skin has been popular throughout history – particularly during the ancient Greek, Roman and Elizabethan eras. Women went to great lengths to preserve pallid skin, as a sign of their "refinement." In Western countries before the 1920s, dark skin was associated with serfdom and toiling in fields all day.  Women even went as far as to put lead-based cosmetics on their skin to artificially whiten their skin tone. However, when not strictly monitored these cosmetics caused lead poisoning. Light-skinned appearance was achieved in other ways, including the use of arsenic to whiten skin, and lightening powders. The preference for fair-skin continued until the end of the Victorian era.

Shortly thereafter, in the 1920s, fashion-designer Coco Chanel accidentally got sunburned while visiting the French Riviera. When she arrived home with a suntan, her fans apparently liked the look and started to adopt darker skin tones themselves. Tanned skin became a trend partly because of Coco’s status and the longing for her lifestyle by other members of society. The photographs of her disembarking in Cannes set a new precedent of beauty; her friend Prince Jean-Louis de Faucigny-Lucigne later said: "I think she may have invented sunbathing. At that time, she invented everything."

I love the way my skin looks when it is tan.  My complexion is clearer, and the cellulite on my butt and thighs is less noticeable.  However, that being said, there is no denying that frequent exposure to the sun leads to pre-mature aging.  My solution is to always wear an SPF, which definitely necessitates the use of a bronzer. I have my favorite, which took a moderate amount of time to find, so I was a little skeptical when given Too Faced Bronzed and Poreless. Some bronzers make your face orange like an Oopma Loompa. Or else they have so much shimmer and sparkle that they are only suitable for a night out at the club, not a day at the office.

Orogold 24K Oil-Control Cleanser 7.3.13I was super excited to test Orogold’s 24K Oil-Control Cleanser. My husband loved the shave balm, so I was quite excited to have my own product to try. This product is contained in the most beautiful packaging I have ever seen. A beautiful box with a magnetic clasp, lined in ivory satin encapsulates a gorgeous blue airless pump bottle with a silver cap. The packaging screams luxe product, and I was excited to try.

Every product from  Orogold Cosmetics is infused with 24K Gold. The naturally rejuvenating and healing property of Gold distinguishes Orogold Cosmetics as the pristine provider of skin care products. The anti-aging benefits of gold can be traced back 5,000 years to Cleopatra, who was said to sleep in a gold face mask every night to enhance the suppleness of her complexion and preserve its natural luminosity. In addition to antioxidant and antimicrobial powers, gold is praised for its purported ability to ward off UV damage, tighten lax skin and reduce the appearance of discoloration. Some believe it can slow the breakdown of elastin, keeping skin firm and taut; other proponents believe gold increases circulation, eliminating toxins from the body and speeding up tissue repair. Orogold’s 24K Oil Control Problematic Skin Cleanser is formulated with natural plant extracts, moisturizers and ingredients such as 24K Gold and Tea Tree Oil. This cleanser is designed to help condition and soothe the skin, leaving it completely clean, comfortable, and refreshed, without shine.

This cleanser left my skin feeling clean and refreshed.  I used it every day for 2 weeks in the shower and noticed a difference in my skins texture.  Although my skin can’t be technically classified as oily (I have an oily T-Zone, but tend to be dry everywhere else), this cleanser did not leave my skin feeling tight and dry, as many other “for oily skin” products often do. I could distinctly see the little bits of gold in this cleanser, the little bits of bling definitely contributed to the luxuriousness of Orogold’s 24K Oil-Control Cleanser. This product is very high end (retails for $138 in the U.S), but with the addition of the gold, and other wonderful botanical ingredients, is worth every penny. This wash, and all of their other products for that matter, would make a delightful gift for those who enjoy the finer things in life.

It has been raining for 4 days. Like seriously raining to the point where my car hydroplaned yesterday on my way to the gym.  All of the beautiful peonies are ruined, and I know the weeds in the garden are going to absolutely take over once the sun finally shines again. This weather turns me into a grouch, and worst of all is what it does to my naturally curly hair. I become a frizz ball, an afro does NOT look good on this girl.  The powers that be in the Certified Fabulous office obviously took notice and passed along to me John Freida Frizz Ease Products to help my pain.

Regardless of what product you choose, when you have the propensity for frizzy hair (all of us curly wavy haired girls), there are a few helpful tips that I must share. The best advice I ever received is to air-dry hair, or use a plug-in household fan. If you use a fan, keep face about 6 inches away from the fan, and brush with a paddle brush. Fans create less frizz than blow driers, because they make somewhat of an "air-dome" around your head, and dry it all at once, whereas blow driers put a high amount of concentrated heat onto the hair, which causes frizz. Heat, although makes the drying process faster, causes frizz ladies.  The best bet is to air dry, although I find that I lose volume at my roots going this route.  If you must blow-dry, use a diffuser, the lowest heat setting and a lower blow setting.  The extra 2 minutes this takes will be worth it, I promise.

John Frieda Frizz Ease Hair Serum 7.1I am so loving John Freida’s Frizz Ease Products.  All curly haired girls should try at least one of the extensive lines of frizz calming products.  I was given the Hair Serum and the Shine Glossing Mist, and I loved both so much that I purchased the Humidity Control Hairspray, which I will also review.  First in this trio is the Serum.  This product should be applied directly out of the shower, before towel drying your hair.  I put a quarter size amount in the palm of my hand (I have longish hair, use less for shorter hair), rub my hands together, and apply from the bottom up.  I flip my head over, and make sure to do my ends first ( a little tip given by Naz Kupelian) working my way up to the roots.  I give my curls a good scrunch then loosely wrap the towel around.  Take this time. Ladies, to choose your outfit of the day, apply your moisturizers, get dressed, feed the dog, whatever. The point is to let your curls air dry a little before moving to the next step.

John Frieda Frizz Ease 100 Shine Glossing Mist 7.1.13 Certified FabulousStep 2 is to decide on your drying process.  If air-drying works for you, depending on the level of hold you desire, you might want to use a curling crème (we all know I love Miss Jessie’s Pillow Soft Curls). I like to use a fan too dry, as suggested above, or if I’m in a hurry my diffuser and blow-dryer.  Once hair is moderately dry, the 100% Shine Glossing Mist is perfect for taming those last bits of frizz. I keep the small spray bottle in my purse as it works wonderfully throughout the day for touchups.  Neither of these products has ever left me greasy, and always leaves me with a really nice shine. On days when I add a little definition with the curling iron, I always finish my style with the Frizz Ease Humidity Spray.  This hairspray has a really nice hold, without leaving my curls crunchy feeling.  It is so apparent that the people at John Freida really know how to eliminate frizz, and their new line of frizz controlling product get a BIG thumbs up from me.  I really love how these products are available at most stores, at a really decent price. I urge all of you girls who battle frizz to give these products a try, and let me know your results.  I know you won’t be disappointed!

Summer is finally here, thank goodness.  The temperature here in Maine is finally a nice balmy 96 degrees.  Everyone here has taken to wearing little sundresses every day.  With the weather so sweet, I have become less maintenance in the makeup department however.  No use in putting on layers of color when skin is tan and humidity is high (don’t you just hate when the makeup melts off).  My makeup routine now consists of sometinted SPF and a great lip color.  Thank you Mary Kay for providing me with 2 great lip products to help me stay pretty, without much effort.

MaryKay Nourishine PLus Lip Gloss 7.1.13For day, I prefer a light shimmery lip gloss. The NEW Special Edition Beauty That Counts Mary Kay NouriShine Plus Lip Gloss is the perfect gloss for daytime wear.  It comes in a pretty tube with a gold screw cap.  The product is swirled within the tube, a light, pretty pink swirled with a shimmery gold. The shimmery peachy-pink shade works well on all skin tones.  This lip gloss is full of Vitamin E, which is so nourishing, smoothing protecting and conditioning for your lips.  This formula gives you brilliant shine plus and instant boost of moisture that leaves lips feeling supple.  This is a wonderful lip gloss, and at a price of $14 it really can’t be beat.

MaryKay Creme Lipstick One Woman Can 7.1.13For night, I like to go with a bold lipstick.  However, it must feel great on my lips, apply nicely and most importantly STAY PUT! Mary Kay’s Special Edition Beauty that Counts Crème Lipstick does all three.  The color I used is called “One Woman Can”, and it is a delightful deep raspberry tint with a swirl of shimmery pink throughout.  Some lipsticks dry out the lip, causing a flaky colored mess.  This lipstick applies easily and feels soft on my lips. The color is great, and I received many compliments. Most importantly is the staying power.  Hours later the color is still strong, and my lips still soft.  Who could ask for more in a lipstick?!?

Mary Kay Ash (founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics) was a true pioneer in the independent sales comedic industry.  When Mary Kay Ash “retired” from a successful career in direct sales in early 1963, she decided to write a book to help women survive in the male-dominated business world. She made two lists. One contained things the companies for which she had worked had done right; the other included the things she felt they could have done better. When she reviewed the lists, Mary Kay realized that she had inadvertently created a marketing plan for a dream company – one which would provide women with open ended potential to achieve personal and financial success.  With her life savings of $5,000 and the help of her 20-year-old son Richard Rogers, Mary Kay launched her dream company on Friday, Sept. 13, 1963.  Her                    company, as we all know, is a HUGE success.

She also steadfastly believed that life’s priorities should be kept in their proper order, which to her meant putting faith first, family second and career third.

Dark undereye circles truly are a drag.  Some only suffer from this unsightly problem when they are overtired, but not I. I was inherited my saggy bags from my mother, the dear.  So whenever a product comes through Certified Fabulous' door that claims to help with this problem, I am always all over it. This month the product is Orico London’s High Rise Rejuvenating Eye Elixir. I tried, I liked, and now Im going to tell you why.

Orico London Rejuvenating Eye Elixir 6.24The ingredient list for this product is what impressed me first and foremost. Orico uses high quality organic ingredients in this delightful under eye cream. Botanical Moringa proteins purify and pollution-proof skin for radiant glow. Rhodiola Rosea (Golden Root) extract from a plant that can only be found in cold regions of the world such as Serbia serves as the bioactive in this product which helps to energize and moisturize the eye area, reducing puffiness and dark circles. Aloe Vera provides the nice cooling sensation I experienced upon application. I love that most of the ingredients in this product have organic origins as well.

I also love how Orico clinically tests their bioactives in the products by independent labs through clinical trials. I think that when companies do this, it is a true testimony to the effectiveness of their product.  It is easy to claim that something is great, but when resources are placed into proving these claims, that’s a huge testimony to the brands integrity. In a 4 week in-vivo study of 17 females with under eye puffiness, the active was applied twice daily and the results were:

- 64% of panelists observed a reduced appearance of darkness under the eyes and also an improvement in overall appearance.

- 60% of panelists observed reduced under eye sag and improvements in skin radiance.
